Congratulations to BS/MS student Alan Sanchez for earning the �� 2018 Forever Buffs Student Award. The annual distinction honors students who demonstrate the "Forever Buffs tenets of connecting, contributing and celebrating their CU pride through extraordinary service to the university."

Alan Sanchez thinks far ahead in time and far away in space. With one course to go for a joint bachelor’s-master’s degree in aerospace engineering, he’s set his sights on a career in spacecraft propulsion. Long-term, he’s ready to ride to Mars to develop a viable human habitat there. On Earth, he’s been doing all the right things to make it happen. Besides immersing himself in engineering mathematics and philosophy, he’s worked paid jobs while attending school fulltime, including roles with the National Snow and Ice Data Center and the Precision Laser Diagnostics Lab of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He’s been a resident adviser in Libby Hall, a private tutor and a childcare provider at a school where immigrant parents learn English. Today Alan has an internship with Tesla. On the side, he’s a competitive break-dancer with his crew, Bedtime Monsters. Along the way, he’s encouraged and advocated for fellow “Dreamers” — people born in other countries, brought to the U.S. as children and raised here without legal immigration status. Among the CU students with temporary relief from deportation under federal DACA policy, Alan has been very involved in their campus group, the Inspired Dreamers, since before its inception. He has also served as vice president for the CU Boulder Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. Mentors and admirers describe him as resourceful, resilient, persistent, confident and courageous. Recently he’s shared his tale with alumni audiences on both coasts, underscoring circumstances others face while expressing gratitude for the support and opportunity he’s found at CU. Already he’s investigating how to pay it forward: In a note of thanks for a scholarship, one mentor reported, Alan asked how he could set one up for somebody else.

Science and engineering isn’t all equations and calculations.

Policy is increasingly playing a hand in what guides the technical world. That’s why CU Engineering in partnership with the CU Office of Government Relations and the Center for Science and Technology Policy Research have teamed up with Colorado state representatives Chris Hansen and Bob Rankin to bring to life the Colorado Science and Engineering Policy Fellowship.

This fellowship will enable STEM students to pull back the curtain on the public policy arena and help bridge the gap between STEM disciplines and the policy-making process at the state level.

The �� has earned second place in NASA’s Breakthrough, Innovative and Game-changing (BIG) Idea Challenge.

The engineering design competition enlists university teams from across the nation to develop creative solutions to some of the agency’s most relevant challenges.

In 2017, NASA called for proposals for large power systems that could be used on the surface of Mars. Because these systems need to be in place before humans ever arrive on the Red Planet, teams were required to propose robotic or autonomous solutions for deployment and sustainable operation.

The Space Research Company, founded by aerospace PhD candidate Christine Fanchiang, and research associate Luis Zea placed second in a national pitch competition in Los Angeles. The RECESS National Pitch Competition was held in June in Los Angeles.

Fanchiang and Zea's company is a startup out of CU Boulder that focuses on small satellites for more affordable and efficient scientific testing in space.

The team also placed third in the CU Boulder New Venture Challenge competition in April.

Their company previously competed in the New Venture Challenge two years ago and did not make it to the championships. Competing this year, they made it to the championships and placed third. They then went on to a regional pitch competition where they beat out CU Denver and Denver University. On June 9, they took second place at the national pitch competition.

CNBC covered the event in "Move over, Mark Zuckerberg. These college start-ups want to be the next big thing." Fanchiang, who is working with NASA this summer, is in the video for much of the piece.

Congratulations to students Markus Geiss, Trevor Bennett, and Thomas Green for being named to the '20 Twenties to Watch' list by Aviation Week for 2016! They were recognized at a March ceremony in Washington D.C.

The award honors top engineering, math, science and technology students.

Bennett and Geiss are aerospace graduate students, and Green is a concurrent BS/MS aerospace student.
