Reduced Modeling of the Magnetorotational Instability

Accretion is a fundamental process in many astrophysical systems, in particular, black holes at the center of galaxies. There has been debate as to the cause of the angular momentum extraction necessary for accretion. However, the magnetorotational instability, in particular its saturated state, provides a mechanism for the efficient transport of angular momentum. In this talk, I will present a reduced asymptotic model for the governing equations of magnetohydrodynamics in this regime. Numerical results will examine nonlinear flows in order to reconcile this model with experiments.
