Surface Plasmon Polaritons (SPPs) are electromagnetic waves that propagate along metal/dielectric interfaces. They have many interesting properties such as wavelength reduction and spatial confinement, and are utilized in such applications as photonic data storage and bio-photonics. In this talk we will present a new nonlinear theory for the propagation of SPPs along a metal/dielectric interface. The governing amplitude equation turns out to be the 2D damped nonlinear Schrödinger equation, and we discuss solutions to this equation in both the elliptic and hyperbolic cases.
