Abstract:Ìý

Development of robust methods of extracting stable features from datasets of various types is considered one of the fundamental problems in scientific visualization.ÌýIn this talk we describe our recent work related to piecewise constant vector field topology. Piecewise constant vector fields can be used to cast vector field topology as a pure computational geometry problem. As a result, common pitfalls of approaches based on numerical integration can be avoided. In particular, algorithms for piecewise constant vector fields are relatively easy to implement so that topological integrity of the results is guaranteed. They also naturally support computation of stable vector field topology and offer a framework to estimate stability of topological features.

The talk will be based on results obtained in collaboration with Eugene Zhang (Oregon State), Guoning Chen (University of Utah), Qingqing Deng (Oregon State) and Robert S. Laramee (Swansea University).
