Creative Distillation - Transcript for Episode 37: It's the Great Pumpkin Episode!

Stefani H  0:06
Welcome to another episode of Creative Distillation. Your hosts Jeff and Brad from the University of Colorado boulders leads School of Business discuss entrepreneurship research while enjoying fine craft beverages. In this installment of Creative Distillation, Brad and Jeff conduct their field research closer to home, the conference room at the Deming Center. It's Halloween, Jeff's favorite time of year and today he's walking Brad in our guest, Desiree Pacheco, from IESE in Barcelona, through a tasting of assorted pumpkin beers. Enjoy and cheers.

Jeff  0:42
Welcome to cribbed the solution where we distill entrepreneurship research into actionable insights. And Jeff York, your host research director at the Deming Center for Entrepreneurship at the University of Colorado, at the Leeds School of Business in lovely Boulder, Colorado. As always, I'm joined by my co host. Hey

Brad  0:59
Jeff, it's Brad Warner. I share a lot of those titles with you. We both work in the dining center. I'm an entrepreneur though, and I know you're happy because today is Halloween.

Jeff  1:08
I am happy. I'm looking at the beers lined up in front of you is the episode ever has even started.

Brad  1:15
Welcome to hell.

Jeff  1:21
Welcome to Hell indeed. This is pumpkin beer trick or treat now. Voting I know. Yeah.

Brad  1:28
I threw something at Jeff today is I brought in because I love pumpkin beer so much. And Jeff knows this. Yes, you do. I brought in a taster for me. And so I would actually like to taste your violin. Why don't you introduce? Are

Jeff  1:42
you like a king now? Where are you? Your beer must be tasted before?

Brad  1:46
I'm not worried about the are you worried about that taster?

Jeff  1:48
Hopefully to you. Sorry, introduce yourself.

Stefani H  1:54
Hi, I'm Stephanie Harrison. I'm the marketing and operations manager at the Deming center and I like pumpkin beer.

Brad  2:01
Yeah. Thank you. So we found really, really a nice balance here. And Jeff, I brought in a crooked stave. Pilsner. Yeah, you've heard about this brewery. I've never heard of this. You want to tell me what you know. Well,

Jeff  2:15
should we introduce our guests that we just learned is gluten free?

Brad  2:19
Neither one is drinking tea in the corner.

Desiree Pacheco  2:21
I needed the wine.

Jeff  2:23
Do we I don't have anyone do heavy whiskey. No. We have hard Seltzer and we have hard kombucha at one point. And we have CBD infused.

Desiree Pacheco  2:32
Kombucha? Yeah.

Jeff  2:33
We haven't heard from Bucha Yeah, me. So Brad is going to look for hard kombucha. That's just the way we rolled out the Deming Center for Entrepreneurship at Leeds School of Business. We indeed have hard Seltzer, hard kombucha and our refrigerator and we used to have some CBD sodas, but they were not very good. You drink them and just so we actually had a really weird mushroom tea from some local startup. Did you ever have that? Stephanie? No, you're very fortunate because the mushroom tea? Well, how describe it so I used to be a river guide. When sometimes river guides aren't the most hygienic people, you may not be aware of this. And sometimes they would store their wetsuits in the winter and like a certain office that belonged to me. That's what it brought me back to those days when I smelled the smell of mushroom tea, the smell of wet mildewy wetsuits

Desiree Pacheco  3:20
my son does that after he goes sailing. Oh, no, no all about it. Oh, Jason, his classic

Jeff  3:26
produces expert on mildewy wetsuits welcome Dr. Desiree Pacheco of ESA International School of Business, basically one of the top business schools and all of the European Union and we are thrilled to have you here with us. Thank you are in the world. I'm sorry, not into the European Union. And also mentioned she is an alumna of our Ph. D. program. And I'm going to cheers her tea. It's so awesome to see you.

Desiree Pacheco  3:50
It was wonderful to be back at CU Boulder and at the Lee School of Business. I haven't been here in years.

Jeff  3:55
Really? How long has it been since you're here?

Desiree Pacheco  3:56
Probably like in Boulder. Maybe at the lead school about six years. Is that the mushroom tea?

Jeff  4:06
Is there anything else? No worries. Well, okay, so we should smell. So we're not going to mention the manufacturer of this product because they're a wonderful company. And I think there's a reason we ended up with a bunch of this for free. Let's just see about this. So we're gonna start our tasting now with some app to genic mushroom tea.

Desiree Pacheco  4:32
I can completely understand that wetsuit analogy that was a good one.

Jeff  4:39
So sorry, you're gluten free. We're not very good hosts. We're terrible hosts. I'm gonna take her so give her a good cocktail after this, or some kind of thing. I'm so sorry.

Desiree Pacheco  4:50
No, it's okay. I'll pick that cocktail.

Jeff  4:54
Everyone Everyone give us smell of the beverage you just opened we're gonna start with

Brad  4:58
as my smell tester.

Jeff  4:59
Oh, Yeah,

Stefani H  5:02
I could see Oh, some people like it. Okay, wow

Brad  5:15
it's like just opening up a barn.

Jeff  5:17
producer Joel doesn't look.

Desiree Pacheco  5:20
Maybe it tastes better than it smells.

Jeff  5:22
I can absolutely assure you it doesn't here, Stephanie, you, you taste. I tasted I drink it. So this was a I think they made this as a test beverage. This is normally a really great local startup that don't want to name because we're criticizing them. At least I am. I think this was a test they tried. And I think it didn't work out well. So they were like, well, we don't want to sell this. What can we do? Let's give it to you.

Brad  5:45
Do you still believe that this could be good for someone? Yes. So disgusting in my life.

Jeff  5:56
Maybe we can fix that right now? Because it's a Halloween special. pumpkin beer. Trick or treat. So where was our last podcast episode? Record? While provision while provision?

Brad  6:09
This Ken Bucha is sticking up the room. Is that bad? Stephanie? I'm sorry. Bucha

Jeff  6:19
there's a giant Christmas tree. Christmas tree. Welcome.

Brad  6:24
You like Campbell?

Jeff  6:26
We're asking you a Christmas tree what he thinks of come Bucha Yes, please. Yeah. Thank you Christmas tree. We appreciate your input. It's Halloween Brad the most glorious day of the year. So Brad is like what we might call a Halloween Grinch. He does not like Halloween. He does not like it even though all the amazing things he's seen. He doesn't like it here nor there. He doesn't like it anywhere. He does not like Halloween. Is that fair enough to say? That is true. Okay, so is there? Is there some deeply personal story behind this where you like bullied on Halloween never

Brad  7:03
was never bullied? I had candy. All that Yeah, I think it's the dumbest nowadays. And I love the holidays like so. This is a start for maybe.

Jeff  7:14
Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving Christmas episode.

Brad  7:17
Oh, yeah. So I thought that was a you know,

Jeff  7:19
this is stupid. Okay, so we got rid of the Bucha I think it was up to an app to genic mushroom tea. Anyway, all right. So we were wild provision while provision is a spin out from this brewery for noses now we had some debate I thought it was named after the four owners dogs their noses coming together around a Bruton I don't know if that's true. Joe, we gotta get booked out for Newsweek and find out the real story like I do knows that for noses has a dispensary on one side of it and a doggie indoor swimming pool on the other side. Which you know, it's a pretty cool name. Might be a pumpkin beer that I would like it might be it might be I'm trying my best to sell. Yeah, it goes right there to my taste. Oh, you're not gonna taste them at all. Hell no, I have. Our audience is going to not be entertained. You pick one that you think that I try this one. So this is an imperial pumpkin ale. This is called pump action. I mean, you gotta love it. Brad's got a gun on the label. A guy blowing pumpkins out of a gun. You know you like that? You like shot guns. Beautiful shot gun. Alright, so let's smell this. We get some. Okay, tell me. We gotta get those various smeller here. Yeah. Just to clear her son. So there's no gluten in this

Brad  8:29
though, is pumpkin beer? Is that a fad? Or is this?

Jeff  8:32
No, it's been going on forever. I mean, pumpkin beer. So like, originally, like the origins of pumpkin beer would have been actually in like maybe even medieval times, because they didn't have a lot of grains sometimes. And they're like, well, well, we got that starch that we can add yeast to delete the sugar and the starch is inserted in alcohol. And pumpkin will do it. So it's like so this mouthwash? No, this has a lovely night. Stephanie. What are your thoughts? Yes, Stephanie.

Brad  8:58
My taster?

Stefani H  9:00
I love pumpkin. This is

Jeff  9:02
what do you think does right? Think it smells really good? Yeah. Okay. Yeah, see, Brad, and I think it's a fantastic beer. But

Desiree Pacheco  9:09
I really like pumpkin and cinnamon and cinnamon in the clothes. I feel like you could sort of tell

Brad  9:15
I'd like to ask my taste or is this something you would actually order at a bar? Yes.

Jeff  9:18
Okay, so this this beer is brewed with multiple adjuncts. adjuncts are things that aren't malt and barley and hops and yeast that are added to beer to make them good. Well, not that you can make good beer without them. This one has pumpkin of course brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, all spice and cloves. This is this is ridiculous. It is so good. It is such a fine here these Could you take it home? I have like a 12 pack of

Brad  9:43
four years ago.

Jeff  9:45
No no no. The only time I got sick a pumpkin beer. I'll tell you a story real quick. Thanks. Producer Joe's. Like leaving with after Jake T that's how bad he was my story real quick. So one time, right. I threw my jack lanterns out and like Arden I lived in Knoxville, Tennessee, we grew volunteer pumpkins. That means the pumpkins just sort of came out of the ground when you throw them out the compost in the garden. And we had like 50 pumpkins and I was the Tennessee State homebrew of the year as I may have mentioned on the podcast before the time. So we made 15 gallons of pumpkin beer for Halloween party we're having now 10 gallons of pumpkin beer got drank. But that meant I had five more gallons a pumpkin beer. So my wife and I drank pumpkin beer. We drank it through Thanksgiving, we were like, Yeah, and that's kind of cool. You know, through Thanksgiving, the fall season, you can all see that, right? That's a reasonable thing to do. Then Thanksgiving came and went and we still had like, you know, two and a half gallons of pumpkin beer. And so I was like, well, maybe we'll add more cinnamon to it. And it'll be like a Christmas beer. And we tried that and we drink it and after a while. I will admit, I got so sick a pumpkin beer. I could not drink it anymore. But that was a long time.

Brad  10:55
So here's the one flaw with that story. You live in Tennessee. Where's that?

Jeff  11:03
So Brad, where's bourbon? Actually, somewhere in the Midwest? Dude. You say your whiskey guy. Were you okay? Thank you. Good. Okay,

Brad  11:11
so my tasters on the clock

Jeff  11:11
okay. Hey thoughts This tastes like pumpkin no other thoughts? It's pretty strong. It's like seven and a half percent not strong enough. So second we have another call Robert for noses and amazing brewery Brad. We're going together. You may not like this I can accept that you don't like this pumpkin beer. Let's try this now you're bound to like this one. This is called atomic pumpkin from New Belgium Brewing Company. This is a special release of what was he called the Voodoo Rangers line. This one has special crossed out and it says spicy.

Brad  11:42
Let's get the taste of the other one out of my mouth.

Jeff  11:44
Well this one will take care of that

Desiree Pacheco  11:45
though the graphics and the beer cans are awesome. Yeah, so

Jeff  11:49
describe them for our audience. We look at this a skeleton

Desiree Pacheco  11:52
aviator is that

Jeff  11:55
what he's wearing? Exactly? Yeah, it's

Desiree Pacheco  11:56
a skeleton in an aviator. Oh

Jeff  11:58
perfect thing. Definitely here is your sample this is atomic pumpkin. All right. Oh, look at this.

Brad  12:04
It's that I love our listeners are literally doing it for them. You said

Jeff  12:09
that you would pay money to listen

Desiree Pacheco  12:11
I should have brought you some vermouth from I should have brought you some kava

Brad  12:14
from Barcelona. What if we meet you in Barcelona? Alright,

Desiree Pacheco  12:17
let's do it. Why don't we yeah, we should record that would be great.

Jeff  12:20
I love Barcelona. Barcelona do it like that? But so that would be fantastic. All right, this summer this summer. We're doing that okay. Now this one is a similar kind of strength also as Pumpkinhead obviously, also a spice. There's a different ingredient in here. That was not the previous one. Can we figure out what it might be?

Stefani H  12:39
It's a spoken smell citrusy.

Jeff  12:41
citrusy. Interesting. You're going the right direction.

Brad  12:44
It's like pumpkin pie.

Jeff  12:46
Yeah, yeah, definitely has a pumpkin pie roll. Do you get anything like when you when you sip it designated tasters since I've been left alone? You guys should see Stephanie. We had a Halloween costume off. What are you exactly?

Stefani H  12:59
No went with obscure superheroes.

Jeff  13:02
So what obscure superhero are you?

Stefani H  13:05
I'm butterfly girl.

Desiree Pacheco  13:06
I was gonna say I think you look like butterflies. You're more like a fairy to me. My fairy?

Jeff  13:13
She could be like a fake creature. Like, all right.

Brad  13:17
Like burns. Give me a frickin sigh. So

Jeff  13:19
what's in it?

Brad  13:20
I don't know. I don't even want to say. I mean, this was in the back of your throat though.

Jeff  13:27
It's chili pepper. There. There are hats chili peppers in this one. Yeah. Which is why it's called a Tomic pumpkin. I really liked this one. I'm not chili beer guy. You know if you remember they made that crap in the 90s called cavecreek. Chili beer. You guys probably don't even remember that until you. Yeah, you won't remember. Roby actually made Rogen in in anyway, they made a really good in Portland. Okay. I actually almost had an internship there. I called the brewer and the founder, John Mayer. I was like, Hey, I'm looking for a job in the brewing industry. He's like, Oh, yeah, we got some barrels that need moving. That'd be good. I'm like, Yeah, okay. So, yeah, I'm like, Okay, this master student in business can what kind of compensation that oh, well, we got a cot. You could pull out in the brewery, you could stay there, I guess for a week.

Brad  14:14
Now, the more you talk, the more interesting your life becomes.

Jeff  14:19
More pumpkin beer I drink the more interesting. So this is just enough chili to encourage you to take another sip. I think I get like a warm like kind of almost whiskey like thing going on here. Thank God. This

Brad  14:30
is once a year. No. So

Jeff  14:31
you don't write this? No, it's disgusting. Disgusting. Like

Brad  14:35
a waste of beer. What is this? So I like pumpkin pie. But to put pumpkin in a beer to me. It made me it's just the whole Halloween thing and this is part of it. I look at this compared to me. It does have a skeleton on it. So yeah, the Pilsner that I'm drinking the Pilsner is fabulous. Oh yeah. Garbage.

Desiree Pacheco  14:53
So this is also apply to coffee. Spice Latte never.

Jeff  14:59
Never All right, we only have two more. So this is good news for everyone. I guess

Brad  15:04
not for me. My taster needs some.

Jeff  15:07
All right. So this one is by a non Colorado brewery. I do not know the proper pronounciation so forgive me if you do is el YSIA en Eliassen. And this one is called the Great Pumpkin, Imperial pumpkin ale. This isn't Seattle, the pumpkin had and actually you'll be happy to know bread. I have this came in a pumpkin beer 12 back so this probably past pumpkin beer season by the time you hear this podcast, but keep an eye out for it next year taster Do you have?

Brad  15:38
My guest says you can still find it in stores.

Jeff  15:39
No, I think it's sold out pretty quickly because Eliason did something really cool. They put four different pumpkin beers into a 12 pack. I actually texted the Deming center a picture of it. Everyone said Yeah, except Brad. This one is the Imperial pump. Gail had no one called Ponca Chino, that was a coffee beer with pumpkin which we'll learn more about in just a moment. Then they also had one which is called Dark of the Moon that had a werewolf on it. That was Imperial Stout with pumpkin. That one was really nice. I drank all of it first. And they had one more that was just a straight up pumpkin ale. So this is Imperial pumpkin. Whenever you see Imperial water bottle, that means Be careful. Otherwise, you'll end up like me last time I went to Seattle and drink a bunch of Imperial IPAs and then don't remember what happened. Can

Brad  16:20
we ever do a podcast Jeff with martinis?

Jeff  16:23
Sure we can Hatton's Yeah, sure. Bring them in and we'll make you saw what happened. Why make cocktails? See Negroni? Yep.

Brad  16:30
crony crony episode number 23. That was terrible. Yeah. It was fabulous. But the drink was

Jeff  16:35
and that's good. How can you not like that? That's got all of the flavor of like sweetness of pumpkin. It's not got a lot of spice in it. It doesn't have the heat or alcohol. The other two even though it's actually stronger. This one's 8.4% Really nice though. The Great Pumpkin is the world's first Imperial pumpkin ale. It's packed with pumpkin and toasted pumpkin seeds, and spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and all spice. That is a fine, fine beverage. Oh my god. What do you think taster?

Stefani H  17:06
It almost makes pumpkin tastes fruity. Some Yeah, it's

Jeff  17:09
sweet, isn't it? This one has the most pie like flavor for sure.

Stefani H  17:13
Yeah.

Jeff  17:14
Well, you think you smelt those right.

Desiree Pacheco  17:16
I think this smells amazing.

Jeff  17:18
Does it really gives a thumbs up taster. Thumbs up Stephanie.

Stefani H  17:22
I like it. I like it a lot. It is still the what was it? Four

Jeff  17:26
Four noses. The first one? Yeah, that is a good one. So my favorite. And then Brad. I'll let you explain what we're getting ready to drink next. Okay.

Brad  17:36
This beer is called nightmare fuel. River North brewery with EPI River North and didn't Denver. There's a river north in Chicago to I was hoping that we'd get there. Well, someday brewed with Logan house. Want to tell me what that means? Open Houses a collaboration maybe?

Jeff  17:50
Yeah, I think it's a coffee.

Brad  17:51
Oh, look at House coffee. Yeah, there we go. Great. So now we're mixing beer and coffee and pumpkins. That's of course because there's a skeleton and a mug with ghosts popping out of it. Something that I would 100% Walk by on a shelf.

Jeff  18:06
So you wouldn't you would not see that and say, oh my god, I must purchase this product. Black Label got a orange skeleton. He's got things. No. Yeah, so I saw that I bought it. I immediately after we were together. When I bought this. We were over at our good friends at Hazel shopping. And I saw that I was like, it's called nightmare fuel.

Brad  18:24
Why would you not buy that? Because it's probably right next to the vodka and the olive and I can actually make a nice Martini. Right?

Jeff  18:35
I mean, just look at that. Queen of the butterflies. You would buy that right?

Stefani H  18:39
I would totally buy that yeah,

Jeff  18:44
all right, we got a new podcast. We're in with Stephanie out with Brad Yeah oh my god All right, here we go. nightmare fuel

Desiree Pacheco  18:54
the name is pretty creative

Jeff  19:00
All right, let's check out this nightmare fuel. Holy cow holy. I mean look at this thing is like oh, wait does not penetrate the depths.

Desiree Pacheco  19:06
This is you smell the coffee right away? Yeah.

Jeff  19:08
Wow. This is like a cappuccino. Oh, wow. Smells good. I don't even taste beer in that barely. What do you think taster? Queen to the butterflies. render your verdict?

Stefani H  19:22
It's a very coffee like it's great.

Jeff  19:25
It is pretty great. What do you think Brad? Actually,

Brad  19:27
this one's okay.

Like an Imperial Stout that you'd have in middle the winter?

Jeff  19:36
Yeah, well, it is an Imperial Stout. To be fair, I'm not sure how much pumpkins pumpkin in this. Sure. Ya know, tons of pumpkin in here. No, I really don't taste any pumpkin. There may not even

Stefani H  19:51
like a different aftertaste. There's a little mother Imperial.

Jeff  19:57
There may be a little Okay, I got I've got actually cool Halloween actionable insight

Stefani H  20:02
not must be where all the pumpkin

Jeff  20:07
that's your action. Well it's like sound for Halloween. If you want to get Brad to drink pumpkin beer, just add enough coffee to it and he will know the thing.

Brad  20:15
tastes terrible. Oh, no. So I guess for Halloween it haunts you.

Jeff  20:22
To be fair, it's called nightmare. I think the idea is that you like drink this and you stay up all night and yeah, things get better.

Brad  20:32
Maybe somehow. One day we're gonna do a podcast from the Lanesborough hotel, my favorite bar in the world. Okay, and we will have a flight of great drinks and maybe right and I think that that maybe will offs that'll provide balance to my life after looking at this. I'm not gonna be able to sleep for a few days. This is great.

Jeff  20:49
It's like objective achieved. Ah, well, you bet. Good sport brand. Doesn't need taster. What do you say about this? nightmare fuel?

Stefani H  20:59
If you like coffee and beer it is a go to?

Jeff  21:03
Yeah. Oh, what do you think just smells like coffee. Right does right? Mostly coffee? I mean, it pretty much just tastes like coffee. Yeah.

Brad  21:10
Would you buy this one? Stephanie?

Stefani H  21:12
Probably not. I have a whole ritual in the morning for how I make my coffee. And I care about that. And I just don't mix my coffee and my beer. Well, I

Jeff  21:23
wouldn't if I was drinking this in the morning. Now this can be really

Stefani H  21:28
really wouldn't drink it in the morning.

Jeff  21:30
No, no, of course not. Yeah, but here Here of course it's well past five o'clock here at the Deming center. It's 11%. That's kind of crazy. That's a lot of alcohol to pack into a beer. I think that's a lot of alcohol it back into a beer that tastes good. The beer tasted good, but

Brad  21:44
the aftertaste just wouldn't really. You can't get aftertaste

Unknown Speaker  21:47
tasting this.

Stefani H  21:49
I was getting a little after Chase. But I think the aftertaste is where it has that little bit of possibly pumpkin in it. Yeah, that doesn't like

Jeff  21:59
It's like we almost got him to like it. And then like there's just said little sneaky little Halloween trick coming in at the end of your treat red. All right, so now is the time where we vote. We'll go around the table and we will vote pumpkin beer a trick or a treat. I say it is an absolute treat. I mean, fine. You may not be a pumpkin beer aficionado, such as I am. But you can learn you can aspire you can really develop your tastes for pumpkin beer. And it'll be something you look forward to and you can celebrate throughout the Halloween season. I think it's an absolute treat. Desiree I came this close this close to buying some pumpkin cordial, because I was like, well, we should have something's not beer. And then I was like, do I really want to drop even I said, Do I really want to drop 60 bucks? I was

Desiree Pacheco  22:47
like, Well, I don't blame you for spending the money. Next year.

Jeff  22:52
I totally forgot that you were gluten free. So I apologize. We invited you know, but you enjoyed smelling these things I did I'm counting that as a vote that this is a absolute treat that you exactly what

Desiree Pacheco  23:02
I'll tell you for noses are the name in my view one of the best smelling ones too. Yeah.

Jeff  23:09
Well, we were just at their spin out brewery so they like made a separate brewery just to brew sour beer and Pilsner that's in Boulder and like an office park. I drove past it a dozen times I had no idea. It was fantastic. And ya know, the pump action is good too. So if you're looking for I don't know how far foreign is distributed, probably not outside the front range of Colorado but I would say of these I would recommend the most for knows is the one you can actually get if you're not in Colorado is probably atomic pumpkin from New Belgium Brewing Company, which is also brewed in Asheville, North Carolina as well. It's easy to find just look for a voodoo Ranger candidates orange, then actually the Eliasson is well, Desiree gives the Eliasson biggest recommendation. And that one probably is nationally district exempt from Seattle and I got it here in Boulder. And if you just are like an evil evil son of a gun or daughter of a gun, and you just want to get some nightmare fuel going. This is what I drink while I've murdered everyone at my Halloween party. I mean, of course just in the sense of a game. It's just just in the game. Right. So

Brad  24:13
you've had all these before and you actually we had them again.

Jeff  24:17
Oh, yeah, no, I sacrificed so my collection for this tastes collection. Oh my god. What do you say? Queen of the butterflies trick or treat pumpkin bear?

Stefani H  24:27
Treat all the way. Absolutely look forward to pumpkin beer season.

Jeff  24:32
I do too. It's definitely a new we made the right choice. When we brought you into the Deming center. You're gonna really change things around here. make things better. And I guess I guess we have to ask Brad.

Brad  24:43
Oh, first of all, I'd like to thank my taster for coming in and bailing me out. That's always great to work with you. Thank you god that's good. So here's a here's something about

Jeff  24:54
fuels got a kick to it. All right on the episode I think we're done. I

Brad  24:58
have an I have an insight here. I'd love that cocktail hour. Wait, hold on hold on.

Jeff  25:02
No actionable insight

Brad  25:07
there we go. Here's the insight. I have loved cocktail hour. Most of my life. I think it's classy. I never thought that there would be a way for me to stop drinking and tell today.
