Placement Guide

This guide is intended to help you self-place into an appropriate level. ALTEC classes do not have prerequisites.

Space available in each class is on a first come, first served basis. If after speaking with us you feel a different level would better match your skills, we would be happy to switch you to another class offered during the same semester or another language, if space is available. You may also speak with the instructor for further guidance.

Syllabi & Placement Assessments

Click on the language to view syllabi and take a placement assessment for help with choosing the appropriate level for your skills and background. Topics may vary in order to align best with students' interests. Note that not every level of every language is taught each term.

Beginning level I is designed for true beginners with zero exposure to the language. Beginning level II is the continuation class and newcomers with a basic understanding of the language are welcome.

Advanced Conversation is appropriate for students who have completed our Intermediate level II class or are otherwise advanced learners. Rotating topics in advanced conversation and grammar will be chosen each term to engage and challenge your learning.
