Toma Peiu is a filmmaker, visualÌýartist, media scholarÌýand educator, presentlyÌýpursuing aÌýPhDÌýinÌýEmergent Technologies and Media Arts PracticesÌýat theÌý°µÍø½ûÇø, where he also teaches foundational coursework in media and anthropology.Ìý
Toma's work as an artistÌýconfounds with his scholarly interests in identifying new modes of expression by engaging technology of various generations and theory inhabiting variousÌýdisciplinary spaces across the arts and (social) sciences. A fellow of the Center for Media, ReligionÌýandÌýCulture and a researcher at CU Boulder, he explores identity formation inÌýdiasporic communities and the shaping of the environment and public urban space as an archiveÌýfor culture, memory and social affirmation. For his dissertation, working across anthropology, georgraphy, media studies and critical media practices, TomaÌýlooks at howÌýmigration,Ìýmobility and borders transformÌýadopted spaces and communities of origin, spending time between field sites in Brooklyn, NY and Central Asia.
He holds an MA inÌýMedia Studies from The New School UniversityÌýin New York, and a bachelor's in Screenwriting and Film Studies from The National University of Dramatic Arts and Film in Bucharest, Romania.Ìý
His media art work, in cinema, video, sound installation,Ìýresulted from a long-term collaboration with filmmaker and educator Luiza Parvu, hasÌýbeen exhibited in over 100 venues on four continents: from film festivals to academic conferences, museums, parks, community centers, art galleries, hotels andÌýmultiplex theaters.
Sharifa Lafon (she/her)Ìýis a curator and interdisciplinary artist dedicated to community building and creative exploration through experimental media. Her practice prioritizes authenticity and the exchange of ideas over commercial outcomes, focusing on projects that span experimental cinema and animation, performance, and media arts. Sharifa is currently the executive director and curator atÌý, and serves on the board ofÌý, a nonprofit organization focusing on inclusive arts discourse for the community.
