Bicycle Recycling and Processing Program

Impounded bike
The mission of the Bicycle Recycling and Processing Program (BRPP) is to promote sustainability on campus by breaking down barriers to cycling. We do this by ensuring ample parking space on campus, creating an environment where affiliates and guests feel as though their bikes will be safe while locked up on campus, and by providing affordable bikes to CU affiliates.

Having clean racks deters bike theft because abandoned and vandalized bikes attract thieves. Abandoned bikes become impounded. Owners have two to three months to claim impounded bikes before they become university property. After the holding period, bikes are refurbished and sold at our annual fall sale. The bikes we can not refurbish for sale are donated to other non-profit organizations or recycled. In 2015, we refurbished around 125 bikes, donated over 50 bikes to non-profits and recycled around 80 bikes. That’s around 9,150 pounds of bike waste diverted from the landfill.

Our Mission

The mission of the Bicycle Recycling and Processing Program (BRPP) is to promote sustainability on campus by breaking down barriers to cycling. We do this by ensuring ample parking space on campus, creating an environment where affiliates and guests feel as though their bikes will be safe while locked up on campus, and by providing affordable bikes to CU affiliates.

What We Do

The BRPP is responsible for removing abandoned bikes from the racks on campus. By removing these abandoned bikes we are able to ensure ample bike parking for affiliates who are actively using their bikes.Ìý

Since the Environmental Center took over this program in 2015 weÌýclear on averageÌýover 700 abandoned bikes from campus a year, which has greatly freed up rack parking space.
