As the year comes to a close, we like to reflect back on progress and accomplishments as we also look ahead to future initiatives and to our steadfast dedication to our commitments to democracy, diversity, equity and justice. Here are 18 of our top highlights and milestones from the year 2018.

The CU Boulder Alumni Association honored Bethy Leonardi (PhD EFPP 鈥�14) and Sara Staley (PhD C&I Literacy 鈥�14), School of Education research associates and co-founders of A Queer Endeavor, with the 2018 Kalpana Chawla Award at the October annual awards ceremony, one of CU Boulder's oldest traditions.

At the fall series of Ed Talks, we learn about ways to challenge assumptions and create new paradigms around diversity and inclusion in education and beyond. Inspired by TED Talks, Ed Talks explore "hot topics" in education through short, engaging presentations led by education faculty and collaborators. Missed the latest Ed Talks? The American Physical Society, a "leading voice in physics,鈥� will honor CU Boulder scientists and educators as part of its spring 2019 awards. The Excellence in Physics Education Award will recognize an interdisciplinary CU Boulder team for their work with the Colorado Learning Assistant Program and the Learning Assistance Alliance, an international initiative based in the School of Education. Congrats to Valerie Otero, Laurie Langdon, and team.

Susan Jurow, associate professor of learning sciences and human development, was recently honored with the Provost鈥檚 Faculty Achievement Award for her contributions to learning in the food movement and her work focused on the organization of learning, participation, knowledge production, and social practices.

Two national organizations have awarded a grant that will deepen and advance our partnership between Denver Public Schools, CU Boulder, CU Denver and Rowan University. Professor Ben Kirshner is one of the Principal Investigators on the project that received a $1.4 million grant from the Hewlett Foundation and Jobs for the Future to expand the Student Voice and Leadership Program.

Jamy Stillman began her career as a bilingual teacher for fourth and fifth grades in an agricultural community on California鈥檚 Central Coast. Those experiences planted the seeds of her growing enthusiasm for leading teacher education and working with teachers in their communities to ensure all children receive an excellent education.
