Transferring schools is no easy feat, a challenge Claire Cameron (ENVD’26) knows too well after joining CU as a sophomore. When she received the Douglas Darden Memorial Scholarship, however, her sense of belonging within the Program in Environmental Design solidified.

“I found such a home for myself in ENVD and I feel like it’s a recognition of that,” Cameron shared. “It’s kind of an appreciation of the work that I’m doing and that it’s heading in the right direction.”

Each year, ENVD awards more than $50,000 in scholarships and awards to support financial need, honor academic merit and celebrate contributions to the field of environmental design. This year, Cameron was one of 13 ENVD undergraduates to receive ENVD scholarships for the 2024-2025 academic year.

Cogan Nguyen (ENVD’25), who won the Hideo Sasaki Scholarship in Interdisciplinary Design, felt that this award has especially helped him to stay motivated. “I've always had a big procrastination issue. I always waited until the last minute and that led to my projects being piled up on each other,” he explained. “So, with this scholarship, I feel like I made that adjustment over time to get better at it. And this is just living proof that it helped in the long run.”

On Thursday, September 12, award recipients were honored and recognized for their achievements during a scholarship luncheon held in the University Memorial Center’s Aspen Room. Along with their families and friends, the students were joined by ENVD staff, faculty and members of Colorado’s chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). The AIA members attended on behalf of AIA’s Architectural Education Foundation (AEF), which has developed a special fund that awards scholarships, grants and prizes to students advancing the profession of architecture and design.

Adam Harding (ENVD’04), partner at Roth Sheppard Architects and a past president of AIA Colorado, currently manages this fund with AIA leadership. As an ENVD alum himself, Harding recognizes how the design profession’s financial requirements can often be a burden to students.

“I hope that [the scholarships] give students a bit of hope and a notion of community,” he acknowledged. “We are a small community in Colorado and we all fiercely support one another and want people to succeed. So, hopefully it does some good in a way.”

For Cameron and Nguyen, these scholarships have provided financial support and a sense of belonging and recognition within ENVD’s tight-knit community.

“ENVD is such a rich community with so many passionate people who really deserve to be recognized,” Cameron explained. “Putting energy back into that and putting funding into that really helps the community grow, and just gives students of different backgrounds a space where they can really be creative.”

The �� Program in Environmental Design has announced the recipient of the 2024 Environmental Design Alumni Awards. This year’s honoree for the Distinguished Alumni Award is Mark Meiser and the Young Designer Award recipient is Kate Sector.

The Environmental Design Alumni Awards honor individuals who have demonstrated leadership and made significant contributions to the design and architectural professions.

Celebrate the 2024 Alumni Award winners on Thursday, Sept. 19, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Environmental Design Building. To kick off the celebration, an opening reception will be held for the Spirit of ENVD: Five Decades of Community and Innovation exhibition, curated by Teaching Professor Jade Polizzi.

Distinguished Alumni Awardee:

Mark Meiser, CRX, CDP, founder, president and CEO of Rothschild Downes, LLC in 1994 and MEIZ Development Company, LLC in 2004.

Meiser, winner of the 2024 ENVD Distinguished Alumni Award, has over 30 years of experience in the mixed-use real estate development industry, in Englewood, Colorado. He holds a bachelor’s degree in environmental design from the ��. Providing national Third Party professional Owner’s Representation and Project Management Services under the Rothschild Downes banner, his commercial achievements include over $10 billion in oversight of design and construction execution that entails more than 15 million square feet of new retail, entertainment and hospitality encompassing 5,500 stores and restaurants opening for business. He has orchestrated retail tenant activity for over 25 new and renovated shopping center grand openings, which have included some of the nation’s highest-profile and most successful mixed-use retail projects. Mark is the co-inventor of TCTrac®, one of the first leading project management and tenant coordination tracking software in the industry. The software provides real-time mobile tenant tracking for day-to-day workflow and reporting systems for the retail industry.

His passion is design and architecture. From historical renovations to mid-century modern, his firm has specialized in cutting-edge sustainability and biophilic design practices on over $20 million design-build residential real estate developments. Projects range from urban multi-family to luxury mountain homes on private ridgelines to the revitalization of Denver Urban Landmark circa 1894 Ross-Lewin Double Residence. His recent development Two Dancing Trees in Breckenridge, Colorado, featured two custom single-family mountain retreats and received the 2023 Platinum Award in Best in American Living (BALA). 

In collaboration with extraordinary clients and colleagues, the Rothschild Downes Team has received over 20 awards in Development Excellence and Design achievements. A few to name include the Innovating Commerce Serving Communities (ICSC) North American Design and Development Award for multiple projects, such as Westfield’s Century City in Los Angeles, The Outlet Collection at Riverwalk in New Orleans and a Finalist for Mack Weldon retail store of the year at Hudson Yards in New York. Additional achievements include the LEED Neighborhood Development Gold Certification for Hudson Yards in New York, the Urban Land Institute (ULI) Award for Excellence for multiple projects including Fifth + Broadway in Nashville, Water Street Tampa in Tampa and Park Meadows in Littleton, Colorado, and most recently the ULI Award for Excellence in Development for Nashville Yards in Nashville.

Meiser is a father to three remarkable children, Maxwell, Karis and Beckett. He spends most of his time traveling the Great American West in a Sprinter van with his Mountain Cur and bestie Taos. Chasing snow on his snowboards in the winter and crushing single-track trails in the summer. 

Young Designer Awardee:

Kate Sector, the Environmental Design 2024 Young Designer Award recipient, graduated in 2019 with a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Design from the ��, where she also earned a certificate in renewable energy and sustainability. During her time at ENVD, she pursued her passion for sustainable architecture, taking on leadership roles within the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) and receiving several awards, including the AIAS CRIT Scholar Fellowship for her senior research project in biomimicry.

After graduation, she joined Lake|Flato Architects in San Antonio, where she now serves as the design performance manager. In this role, she guides firm-wide design performance efforts, including performance goal setting, building simulations and sustainable certification management. Sector also researches emerging building performance topics such as embodied carbon and climate resiliency, presenting her findings at national and local conferences like AIA National, Greenbuild and the TxA Conference. Additionally, she led the certification of Lake|Flato’s office to WELL Platinum, the first of its kind in San Antonio.

In her Texas community, she has chaired the local AIA San Antonio Committee on the Environment (COTE) and actively engaged with UTSA’s School of Architecture and Planning as a guest studio critic, presenter and organizer of the second-year student COTE Top 10 competition. She has been recognized with two emerging professional awards–the 2023 San Antonio Rising Star and the 2024 Texas Society of Architects (TxA) Associate of the Year. Sector now serves as a committee member of the TxA Committee on the Environment (COTE) and aims to continue empowering designers and fostering a regenerative future through her commitment to sustainable architecture.

"Reflecting on my time at ENVD, the most memorable takeaway is the close-knit community of students and teachers, which fostered lifelong friendships. My involvement in AIAS was transformative, enhancing my leadership skills and providing opportunities to meet local architects and attend the AIA Forum in Boston, Seattle and Austin. Participating in the restoration of the Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse ignited my interest in historic preservation and led to meeting Maruf Miramatov, artisan and architectural historian from Dushanbe,Tajikistan, as well as collaborating with Nate Jones and Shawhin Roudbari on the book An Architecture of Dialogue: Learning from the Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse.

ENVD’s unique multidisciplinary approach, encompassing architecture, landscape architecture and urban planning, has been crucial in my career development. This approach helped me think holistically about design, from the big picture to the smallest detail. Additionally, ENVD introduced me to the work of Lake|Flato Architects, leading to my first internship and a five-year tenure with them. Overall, my time at ENVD was marked by significant personal and professional growth, preparing me for a successful career in sustainable architecture."

Assistant Teaching Professor Juan Grisales is a versatile transdisciplinary designer and researcher with studies in architecture, landscape architecture, ecology, and urbanism. His work focuses predominantly on design research methods to read, decode, and project misinterpreted, and often marginalized domains (territories, ecologies, and publics), their evolving processes, as well as their relation to their larger bio-physical geography. Assistant Professor Nesrine Mansour, joins ENVD from South Dakota State University and is an expert in architecture and the built environment. Her research centers on the convergence of architecture, digital media and sacred spaces, bridging disciplines like social sciences, digital humanities, and modern technology such as artificial intelligence and virtual reality. Associate Teaching Professor Martín Paddack is founder and principal at DesignMAP, in Washington, D.C. He is an architectural designer, artist and writer who has worked in Puerto Rico, Ecuador, Spain, Uruguay, Peru and the United States. With previous teaching experience in Fine Arts and English, Martín is most interested in finding deeper meanings in architecture through the intersections of color, art, language, cultural identity, social responsibility, sustainability and fabrication. For generations of design students at CU Boulder, the third floor of the Environmental Design building was more than just a workspace – it was a canvas for creativity and community. Alumni speak fondly of the infamous “carpet garden,” a lounge-like area that once held floor-to-wall carpets. They reminisce about working late into the night with friends, materials and designs spread across the rickety drafting tables. ENVD’s third floor always seemed to be a space that encapsulated the creativity and rigor of design students.

This summer marks another iteration of third floor updates and while there may not be a wall of carpet addition, the third floor will be, in many ways, student-oriented once again.

Assistant Teaching Professor Jared Arp and Creative Labs Center Coordinator Kiera Cudmore spent much of the summer redesigning the remaining third floor studios while constructing new study spots, maker spaces and lounge seating on the western side of the building. “Before, there was just no space to study or gather,” Arp explained. “People would crowd around the stairway, sit in the lobby or take over empty studios. It just wasn’t working.”

Once filled with crooked bar stools and crowded drafting tables, the third floor is now home to a newly furnished and carpeted student lounge area complete with plushy chairs and dangling lamps. After students finish their naps, they can head next door to the cubicle-like worktables in the newly designated student study space. Constructed from old drafting desks, the cubicles offer private, secluded pods for those late-night study sessions.

“It’ll be really nice just to open up the space a bit more,” Arp said. “It’ll help increase the movement within these rather confined spaces.”

The studios, which, according to student feedback, were notoriously loud and overcrowded, have now been entirely refurbished and rearranged. Each space is equipped with repurposed tables and seating, new shelving, TV monitors, fabric partitions for noise control and ample open space for review and pin-ups.

With its bright yellow walls and large black lettering, the Community Engagement, Design and Research Center (CEDaR) in the Environmental Design building is hard to miss. But with a single door and no indoor windows to reveal the room’s inner workings, the mystery surrounding what goes on behind those walls is palpable. “The space is a little bit closed right now,” Shawhin Roudbari, ENVD assistant professor and CEDaR’s co-director said. “Even if the yellow is very calling and is screaming ‘yes CEDaR is here!’ it still doesn’t open the doors.”

One way to open the doors might be to redesign them.

CEDaR is one of 75 research hubs housed within the CU Boulder campus community and is the only one that has a direct relationship with the Program in Environmental Design (ENVD). Through community-oriented services and projects, the center fosters innovative research and education around critical urban challenges. “CEDaR has a long history of engagement,” Jota Samper, ENVD assistant professor and Roudbari’s co-director of CEDaR explained. “What we’re trying to do is connect academic research and environmental design with our communities.”

CEDaR also strives to engage directly with design students by bringing them on as research assistants and including them in community collaborations. During the 2022-2023 academic year, the Center hired over a dozen students and funded projects centered around transformative urban design, cultural geography and participatory, anti-racist planning. “It’s a unique opportunity for undergrads to participate in this kind of work. It’s really rare,” Roudbari expressed.

But despite the Center’s long history and active engagement practices, Roudbari noted that most ENVD students may be unfamiliar with CEDaR and its work. When he and Samper first began their careers at ENVD seven years ago, CEDaR was a “thriving, upcoming place.” The COVID-19 pandemic, however, diminished the capacity of the Center to engage with both the community at large and the students within the program.

Over the past year, the two directors have been working to rebuild momentum lost during the pandemic and reorient the Center in a new direction. They’ve secured a permanent home for CEDaR in ENVD 213, put in a small amount of “elbow-grease” and “DIY-renovation" work and have been actively socializing the space. But they also have aspirations to make the space even better.

After receiving a grant through the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP), the Center funded initial research to collect input on what a redesign of the space might look like. The research involved gathering ideas and feedback through workshops both within the ENVD community and through engagement with outside architects, professors and students. Significantly, student assistants have been key in leading this research and compiling potential design plans to present to donors in order to make the redesign feasible.

The second phase of the project will involve workshops, prototyping and implementation. “We want a space that is flexible, transformable and open,” Samper noted. “Furniture that ensures the space is open to big meetings with room for workstations for all of our research assistants and ourselves.” The directors hope that the newly designed space will serve as an intermediate between a classroom and a meeting room—a place that captures CEDaR’s mission to integrate student and faculty interactions into meaningful community design work.

Among their external projects, the folks at CEDaR aim to play a more active role in evolving the culture around research and engagement within the ENVD community. Through open monthly meetings, CEDaR will continue to be a place to discuss pressing urban issues, host research workshops and create community-informed designs. The CEDaR directors hope that the redesign process, and perhaps knocking down a few bright yellow walls, will help make these efforts a little more visible.

Teaching Associate Professor Dean Bacalzo comes to CU Boulder with more than 18 years of industry experience and 12 years of teaching experience in higher education. He has a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, an MS in Design from Arizona State University, and is currently working on his EdD from CSU at Pueblo where he is focusing on “solving wicked societal problems with creative, independent, and critical thought.” Learn more.

Teaching Associate Professor Caitlin Charlet, Assoc. AIA, LEED AP, is a Green Classroom Professional, Fitwel Ambassador and Sustainable Strategies and Healthy Material Certified. She is the Principal of MATERIALBUREAU, which works at the intersection of equity, healthy materials and methods within built environments. She is Founder of the Studio of Inclusionary Urbanism and Civic Architectural Actions (SolUaCAA), and fellow at the Centre for Conscious Design and the Urban Design Forum, as well as a volunteer at Design Advocates. Teaching Professor Case Lindberg has committed the last decade to the scientific intersection of design and health. He holds a Ph.D. in psychology and a Master of Education from Stanford University, and a Master of Architecture from the University of Colorado Denver. His expertise spans research methods, including physiological and environmental sensing techniques. Learn more.

Teaching Associate Professor Mark Rukamathu, AIA, NCARB, grew up in a multi-cultural environment across the U.S. East Coast, Bangkok Thailand, and Arkansas. Mark's architectural journey started with drafting classes in high school, entering higher education at Northwest Arkansas Community College, receiving his Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Arkansas cum laude, and Master of Architecture from Harvard Graduate School of Design with distinction. Assistant Professor Elena Sabinson is a design researcher engaged in trans-disciplinary work that operates at the boundaries of environmental design, psychology, and emerging technologies. Elena received a PhD in Human Behavior and Design from Cornell University. Elena’s doctoral research was completed in the Architectural Robotics Lab, where she worked on bio-informed, soft robotic surfaces embedded in the environment to support emotional wellbeing. Assistant Professor Zannah Matson's research and design work focuses on the histories and contemporary reinterpretations of landscapes throughout processes of colonization, extraction, and state infrastructure projects. Her current work traces the afterlives of coloniality through highway construction in Colombia’s Eastern piedmont landscapes to think about power structures, transportation infrastructure, and visual representation in Latin American landscapes more generally. The Environmental Design (ENVD) building is an eerily quiet place in the summer. With barren studios, empty hallways, and dormant 3D printers, the student and faculty spaces in the building often resemble a ghost town. Unlike a ghost town, however, the old worktables and rickety studio stools haven’t been left behind to gather dust and rust. Rather, this ghost town underwent a redesign.

Over the summer, a hard-working group of faculty, staff and students spent months updating studio spaces in both the basement and eastern wing of the third floor. After collaborating on studio update projects last summer, Marcel de Lange, teaching professor, and Jared Arp, teaching assistant professor, hoped to continue the momentum this year by tackling adjacent studio spaces in dire need of updates.

“Why in the 21st century are incoming students sitting on a barstool on some kind of drafting desk that doesn’t even hold your computer?” de Lange questioned. “Why not mimic a little bit more the way that most design agencies work?”

Updating student spaces to mimic professional offices, however, isn’t exactly the most affordable endeavor. According to de Lange, a new worktable alone would cost the program $2,000 each. And with fall 2023 marking the largest incoming class for ENVD, there is a demand to expand the number of students per studio, which means more tables. “There’s a budget available but it’s not enough to do that. We decided we could do it in-house,” de Lange said.

Staff and student workers at the Center for Innovation & Creativity (CINC) began the in-house project by collectively constructing 40 custom-made tables matched with repurposed and ergonomic office chairs. With a laser-cut steel frame, wooden tops and legs cut by a CNC machine and built-in power outlets (one for each student), the tables are designed to be sturdy, long-lasting, portable and ADA accessible. They’ll also encourage collaboration.

“The old space didn't really foster creativity or teamwork,” Arp noted. “You had your own desk, your own island. This way students will be working at tables with others.”

True to ENVD’s values, the team carried out the project with environmental sustainability in mind. Recycling and reusing pieces of the old furniture was key to the project. Old table legs were converted into light fixtures, wooden pieces from the old drafting desks were added to the new tables, shelving systems with added cubbies were constructed from outdated shelving materials and CINC scraps. “Those sorts of things have been worked into the project,” Jared noted. “One for budget purposes and two because it’s the right thing to do so we don’t waste this material. The types of materials that were chosen are low environmental impact, high longevity and strength.”

By updating the studio spaces to mimic design agencies while using a sustainable approach, incoming and current students will be better prepared to work in a professional setting after graduation. Apparently, even ghost towns need their building updates.

The Staff Leadership Team was established in July 2022 as part of a staff reorganization during the transition and retirement of Assistant Program Director Peggy Gordon. The reorganization emphasized three areas of staff responsibilities key to the support and success of the Program in Environmental Design: finance and human resources, operations, and undergraduate education and student success.

The team has been charged to work as a cohesive unit to lead, assess and support the program’s culture of development and engagement amongst staff, and will play an integral role in realizing the program’s core mission while working with Stacey Schulte, ENVD director, the Executive Committee and Executive Leadership team to support the goals and needs of the program.

Developing a full change management plan for the staff reorganization was key in the first year of implementation. In partnership with Director Schulte and input from staff, the team developed the plan and established a new vision and purpose for each unit, refining operations and workflows, creating new partnerships and collaborations. The team also spent time writing job descriptions for new positions and revised several existing ones as part of a long-term strategic staff hiring plan.

Under the realm of undergraduate education and student success, the advising team launched a new advising model to include a first-year advising team and an upper-division advising team. The new model aligns with campus best practices, and it has allowed ENVD to lower advising caseloads for the first-year team so that more time can be dedicated to support incoming students.

This year, the Staff Leadership team will continue to build on their work to foster an inclusive, creative, industrious and supportive environment.

Established in July 2022, the Staff Leadership Team has been charged to work as a cohesive unit to lead, assess and support the program’s culture of development and engagement amongst staff, and will play an integral role in realizing the program’s core mission while working with ENVD Director Stacey Schulte, the Executive Committee and Executive Leadership team to support the goals and needs of the program.

As we begin the new semester, we are excited to welcome Jesse van Horne and Christy Rogers as instructors for our landscape architecture track. We are also thrilled to announce that Caleb Wright will be our new Manager of Academic Support Centers. In addition to our recent hires, we are in the process of hiring new staff positions for a finance, data analytics & data assessment manager, an academic advisor and an academic coach.

This fall, the Program will say farewell to instructors Betsy Johnson, Alexandra Beach and Justin Bellucci, as well as assistant professor Danielle Rivera, associate professor Susannah Drake, recruitment & advising coordinator Fernando Martinez and academic coach Alexis Harper. Their contributions to ENVD will be everlasting, and we wish them all the best in their future endeavors.

The Environmental Design First-Year Experience (FYE) Program launches on Thursday, August 26. The launch event will welcome and cover how the new program will work for all incoming ENVD students. Students will also learn how they can become eligible for a studio supplies scholarship.

First-year incoming and transfer students will automatically be enrolled as part of the FYE program, which will provide opportunities for design mentorship, strengthening academic confidence within the design program and assist in building out a network of connections amongst peers and the ENVD community.

Attend the launch event on Thursday, Aug. 25, 5:15 p.m. in ENVD 134.
