Biography

Shawhin (shaw-heen) studies and teaches about ways designers organize to address social problems. He bridges sociological studies of social movements and race with architectural theory. Shawhins research contributes to theories/practices of contentious politics and employs ethnographic and speculative design methods. He is a founding member of the Dissent by Design research collective, which publishes work in architectural, sociological, and interdisciplinary journals. Shawhin organizes with Dark Matter University (DMU) and Design as Protest (DAP) and is co-director of the Center for Community-Engaged Design and Research (CEDaR) at the Program in Environmental Design (ENVD). He loves running around in the mountains and wrestling with animals.
