Ph.D. student, Kathryn (Katy) Hinkelman received 2022 Marlene & Joseph Borda Architectural Engineering Graduates Fellowships from Penn State University to attend the 5th International Conference on Building Energy and Environment (COBEE) in Montreal Canada, July 25-29, 2022. She will present her work titled "Ecosystem-Level Biomimicry for the Built Environment: Adopting Systems Ecology Principles for the Control of Heterogeneous Energy Systems" at the conference. This paper is co-authored by Dr. Michael Wetter from LBNL, the SBS lab director, Dr. Wangda Zuo, and the lab alumni Dr. Jing Wang and Dr. Sen Huang.

The purpose of the Marlene & Joseph Borda Architectural Engineering Graduates Fellowships is scholarly dissemination. It is for Architectural Engineering graduate students, enrolled in Ph.D., M.S. and M.Eng. degree programs at Penn State, who plan to present their research findings at a national or international meeting (conference, workshop, symposium, etc.).

Ph.D. candidate, Cary Faulkner received a travel grant to attend the 2022 ASHRAE Annual Conference in Toronto. He will present his work titled "A Novel Physics-Informed Algorithm for Training AI Models to Predict Indoor Airflow" at one of the Artificial Intelligence for Environmental Modeling seminars. We wish him safe travels and good luck with his presentation!

Cary successfully passed his comprehensive examination at CU Boulder recently. His work is entitled "Advanced Modeling of HVAC Operation for Sustainable and Resilient Office Buildings During the COVID-19 Pandemic". Cary's research interests include building system modeling, computational fluid dynamics, indoor environment modeling, and machine learning. Ph.D. students, Nasim Mamaghani and Saranya Anbarasu received the 2021-22 ASHRAE Rocky Mountain Chapter Student Scholarship. The regional ASHRAE chapter at Denver awards scholarships to students who demonstrate a strong background in HVAC&R and have good communication and leadership skills. The award announcements were made during the virtual student night event on February, 2022.

Through its scholarships, ASHRAE seeks to motivate students and prospective students worldwide to pursue an engineering or technology career in the HVAC&R field, part of the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) industry. The Society’s Scholarship Program also serves the public interest by aiding in the education of men and women to become qualified to practice as engineers in HVAC&R.

SBS Lab alumnus, Dr. Yunyang Ye, has been selected as recipient of the 2022 Hommer Addams Award. This award was given in recognition of his contribution to the ASHRAE research project RP-1771, "Developement of new baseline models for U.S. medium office buildings based on commercial buildings energy consumption survey data". He conducted this research while completing his Ph.D. at our lab. For more information about this award please visit here.

Dr. Ye obtained his Ph.D. degree in Architectural Engineering at �� in 2019. During his study at CU Boulder, he focused on large-scale building energy modeling, sensitivity analysis, building energy codes, and net zero energy community. He received the ASHRAE Grant-in-Aid Award ($10,000) and ASHRAE Student Travel Grant. He was also nominated by the Department of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering as the sole nominee of the department to compete for Outstanding Ph.D. Dissertation Award at the College of Engineering and Applied Science. He is currently working on building energy simulations and analyses, and urban scale modeling at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.

Ph.D. student, Cary Faulkner, recorded two presentations for the ISHVAC 2021 Virtual Conference on Healthy, Smart and Interactive Built Environment. These presentations were titled A Novel Physics-informed Algorithm for Training AI Models to Predict Indoor Airflow and MERV 13 Filtration for Office Buildings During COVID-19 Pandemic. Additionally, he received best paper awards for both these works.

As Cary continues his third year of PhD study in the SBS lab, he will resume working on developing physics-based building system models for evaluating advanced control strategies to improve building energy efficiency and indoor environment. His research interests include building system modeling, computational fluid dynamics, indoor environment modeling, and machine learning. Ph.D. student, Chengnan Shi, received the generous $1,000 USD travel grant from the ASHRAE Student Activities Committee to travel to the Winter Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada in February 2022. Chengnan, as the recipient of the travel grant will be exposed to many activities such as seminars and technical committees at the Winter Conference.

Chengnan Shi is an Architectural Engineering Ph.D. student in the Sustainable Buildings and Societies Laboratory. His current research interests are building energy system modeling and optimization, building-to-grid integration. He is an active ASHRAE Student Member and served in the ASHRAE CU Boulder Student Branch as President in academic year 2020-21.

Dr. Zuo has been elected as a Fellow of the International Building Performance Simulation Association (IBPSA) in 2021. This honor has been given to members of the association who have attained distinction in the field of building performance simulation.

Dr. Zuo has spent nearly 20 years in the building modeling and simulation domain and has been serving as IBPSA Treasurer and Affiliate Director representing the United States since 2016 along with his other professional community services. CU Boulder has recently received $750,000 award from National Science Foundation (NSF) to create the industry-focused Center for Building Energy Smart Technologies (BEST).

BEST will bring together universities and industries to transform the building industry through an integrated systems approach to design, retrofit, construct, and operate sustainable buildings and cities. The center will also address design and operation solutions for the built environment associated with extreme weather events, which are becoming more frequent and intense due to a rapidly changing climate.

BEST will be in two sites: the lead site at �� (CUB) and the partner site at City College of New York (CCNY), taking advantage of the diverse academic, natural, and industrial environments these locations provide. Associate professor and SBS lab director, Dr. Zuo, will be the Co-Principal Investigator of the project as a part of the CU Boulder team.

Dr. Zuo holds a joint appointment at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and has multiple projects funded by NSF, U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Department of Homeland Security and many more over the years. His current research focuses on smart, sustainable, and resilient buildings, communities, and cities.

A 3-year international collaborative research project among SBS Lab at ��, University College Dublin and Ulster University has received funding from the U.S. National Science Foundation, the Ireland Science Foundation, and the Northern Ireland Department for the Economy, which adds up to about $1.2 million dollars. This joint research effort aims to reduce residential building energy consumption, which roughly accounts for up to 30% of greenhouse gas emissions across these three jurisdictions. This project will provide policy makers with the tools to make conscious decisions about residential retrofitting solutions from local to national level.
