A open source Modelica library for the NZEC is built to facilitate the design and operation of a real NZEC. Using this library, a virtual testbed is built based on Historic Green Village, a real-world NZEC on Anna Maria Island, Florida. The testbed consists of a framework and system models for different subsystems, including solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, ground-coupled source heat pumps, buildings, the electric grid, and so on. The framework streamlines the process for simulation and optimization with Python; the models include both physics-based ones and data-driven ones, designed for different data availability and application contexts. The models are validated against the measurement data.

Release Notes

07/28/2020: SCC-NZEC library V1.1 released.
- Added new package OccupantBehavior which enables occupancy-dependent schedule generation for thermostat setpoints, etc.
03/27/2019: SCC-NZEC library V1.0 released.
- First release of the library. It contains component and system models supporting community-scale building load, domestic hot water, heat pump system and power source modeling.

This project is funded by Department of Energy and is a joint project with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The project goal is to develop a framework to prioritize behind-the-meter end-use resources, and a prototype tool that offers assessment of end-use load-utilization patterns and provides real-time dynamic prioritization of the energy-consuming loads based on end-use functional utility to satisfy occupant activity requirements.

Recently, our lab received a new funded project studying “Comprehensive Pliant Permissive Priority Optimization”. The project is funded by Department of Energy and it is a joint project with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

On Oct. 21, the Colorado Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU) and CU Boulder's Community Engagement, Design and Research (CEDaR) Center hosted the Community Building Colorado-Style conference. Speakers and panelists discussed innovations to encourage small businesses, smart city technologies, creative districts, mobile and manufactured housing communities, green infrastructure strategies, citizen and youth engagement in city design and more.

Dr. Zuo attended the conference and gave a talk about our Net Zero Energy Community project in the "Smart City and Community: Connecting the Dots" session.

The goal of this project is to develop a new planning framework for smart, connected and sustainable communities that allows meeting such zero energy, zero outage, and zero congestions goals by optimally deciding on how, when, and where to deploy or upgrade a community's infrastructure. By bringing together interdisciplinary domain experts from data science, electrical engineering, and civil and architectural engineering, this research will yield several innovations:

Novel big data techniques for faithfully creating spatiotemporal models for smart communities that integrate data from heterogeneous sources and shed light on the composition and operation of a given smart community;
Novel, data driven performance metrics that advance powerful mathematical tools from stochastic geometry to explicitly quantify the health of smart communities via tractable notions of zero energy, zero outage, and zero congestion;
Advanced analytical tools that bring forward novel ideas from optimization theory to devise the most effective strategies for deploying, upgrading, and operating various community infrastructure nodes, given the scale, dynamics, and structure of both the data and the community;
A virtual smart community testbed that can accurately reconstruct, simulate, and evaluate the theoretical framework by leveraging open nonproprietary real world big data sets.
