Brenda Nicolas, global and international studies assistant professor and Bene Xhon Zapotec from the Sierra Norte in Oaxaca, Mexico, pursues research on global Indigeneity, Latin America, and transborder diasporic studies. Her work looks at the transborder communal experiences of Zapotec between Los Angeles and Oaxaca. Her book in progress, Pueblo Autonomy: Indigenous Communal Practices Across Settler Colonial Borders, examines how the experiences of women and the U.S.-raised are central to sustaining communal actions that disrupt U.S. and Mexican settler capitalist structures and notions of dependency, assimilation, and elimination that further view them as passive and detached from their ancestral homelands.Ìý
