The R&D 100 Awards are a renowned worldwide science and innovation competition celebrated their 62nd year in 2024. Entries were received from 16 different countries, and RASEI Fellow Steven Spurgeon led one of the winning teams.

The Autonomous Electron Microscope (AutoEM) received the 2024 R&D 100 award! AutoEM is the result of nearly 7 years of hard work by a dedicated team of scientists, including Steven R. Spurgeon (NREL, formerly PNNL), Matthew Olszta, Sarah Akers, Kevin Fiedler, Derek Hopkins, Jacob Haag, Kayla Yano, Christina Doty, and Marjolein Oostrom (PNNL).

AutoEM embeds human-like reasoning into the control of electron microscopes, which are a cornerstone of the study of materials and chemical systems. Using AutoEM researchers can conduct reproducible, high-speed experimentation nearly 1000x faster than before. We’re excited for the possibilities that AutoEM will unlock, as well as ongoing commercialization efforts with JEOL-IDES, one of the world’s largest analytical instrumentation manufacturers.

The R&D 100 Awards, often referred to as the "Oscars of Innovation," are prestigious annual awards recognizing the 100 most technologically significant products, processes, materials, or software introduced to the market in the previous year. The awards, established in 1963, are open to submissions from around the world and are judged by a panel of experts based on technical significance, uniqueness, and usefulness. Winning an R&D 100 Award is a mark of excellence for innovators and their organizations, signifying the development of groundbreaking and commercially promising technologies.

The Brown Institute for Basic Sciences at Caltech announced the 2024 class of Brown Investigators. Eight distinguished mid-career faculty who are working on fundamental challenges in the physical sciences were selected, which included RASEI Fellow Gordana Dukovic. These investigators were highlighted for their potential for long-term practical applications in chemistry and physics. Each investigator will receive up to $2M over the next five years.

The Brown Institute for Basic Sciences at Caltech was established in 2023 through a $400m gift from Caltech alumnus Ross M. Brown. The investigator award were established in 2020 in support of the belief that “scientific discovery is a driving force in the improvement of the human condition”. A total of 13 investigators were recognized in the first three years of the program, and with the Award now being established at Caltech, the plan is for eight investigators to be selected each year.

Brown Investigators from all cohorts are invited to an annual meeting that offers opportunities to share ideas, network, and develop new collaborations and directions.

The American Academy of Arts and Sciences was founded in 1780 to help a young nation face its challenges through shared purpose, knowledge, and ideas.The first members were selected in 1781, and in 2024 250 members were elected to join the Academy. The new members are recognized for their excellence.The members elected in 2024 include representatives from across 31 disciplines, including such diverse fields as psychology, photography, journalism, Economics, history, music, and law.

Art Nozik was recognized as part of the Chemistry Section, joining a prestigious group of scholars from across the Arts and Sciences.

List of 2023 Recipients

On April 5, 2023, the Board of Trustees of the John Simon Guggenheimn Memorial Foundation awarded the 2023 Guggenheim Fellowships to a diverse group 171 exceptional individuals, including RASEI Fellow Gordana Dukovic. Chosen from a rigorous application and peer review process out of almost 2,500 applicants, these successful recipients were appointed on the basis of prior acheivement and exceptional promise.

Gordana was the only chemist awarded in this year's class. In all 48 scholarly disciplines and artistic fields, 72 different academic institutions were represented in this year's class of Fellows, who range in age from 31 to 85.

This week seven RASEI students were recognized for their commitment to research through the awarding of graduate research fellowships from both the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy Office of Science and the National Defense Science and Engineering Program.

The purpose of the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship (NSF-GRF) is to help ensure the quality, vitality, and diversity of the scientific and engineering workforce of the United States. The program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students who are pursuing full-time research-based master’s and doctoral degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The program was established to recruit and support individuals who demonstrate the potential to make significant contributions in STEM.

This year four RASEI students were awarded an NSF-GRF:
