Tips to help you get out of your comfort zone
Often, the hardest part of trying something new is the first step. Participating in a new activity or attending a new event may feel intimidating or uncomfortable. Yet, stepping outside your comfort zone and trying new things can enhance your college experience and help you find your community.
Sign up for things you love
Getting out of your comfort zone can mean different things to different people. Even if you love an activity, attending something new can still feel risky if you don’t know anyone else participating. It’s not always easy, but take the risk! You’ll likely meet people with the same passions and interests you have who also want to meet new people. Many events offered by the Division of Student Affairs allow you to get involved and explore opportunities without feeling like you need to make a big commitment. Plus, doing things you already love can help you feel more confident to try new things later.
Try new activities
CU Boulder has a wide range of events, student organizations and activities to help students explore new interests and get involved. Maybe you’ve never rock climbed before and want to try a climbing course at the Rec Center. Or perhaps you want to start volunteering but aren’t ready to commit long-term. You can sign up for a one-time CU in the Community event. College is a wonderful time to try different activities to see if you ignite a new passion. Check out the many ways you can get involved on campus.
Show your Buff pride
Attending sporting and entertainment events can be a way to connect with others and try new things while you support your fellow Buffs. CU Boulder offers many ways to participate in school events and be a part of the community. Attending these events can feel like a low-pressure way to get involved because you are observing versus actively participating. You can cheer on a team, watch a play or enjoy a musical performance. Check out CU Presents, Program Council and CU Athletics to explore upcoming events.
Invite others to join you
The fear of rejection can keep people from reaching out to others, especially new people. But at college, many other students want to make friends and get involved. You can ask your roommates, classmates, co-workers or acquaintances to join you in an activity or event. You can keep it casual. It’s OK if they say no or can’t join you. You should be proud of yourself for
being brave enough to take that step. And be open to other people’s invitations even if you feel a little intimidated to try something new. Most things feel a little easier and fun with a friend.
