More than 80 student inventions ranging from new games and consumer products to devices designed to assist people with disabilities will be demonstrated at the ITLL Spring Design Expo at the University of Colorado at Boulder on Saturday, April 24.

The popular end-of-semester event, which will be the largest the College of Engineering and Applied Science has ever held, will showcase the work of about 400 engineering students at CU-Boulder. Student projects include a carbon-dioxide ball launcher, a laser light show, walk-on-water devices, and many other examples of student ingenuity.

This year's Expo, which is free and open to the public from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., will include exhibits and demonstrations in both the Integrated Teaching and Learning Laboratory and the Discovery Learning Center. The two buildings are located in the Engineering Center Complex on the southwest corner of Regent Drive and Colorado Avenue. Free parking is available across Regent Drive in lot 436.

A dozen student research exhibits also will be among the projects on display in the Discovery Learning Center, which is adjacent to the ITL Laboratory.

°µÍø½ûÇø one-third of the design projects were designed and built by first-year engineering students. The Expo also will feature many "capstone" design projects created by seniors in aerospace, chemical and mechanical engineering, and computer science. Hewlett Packard is sponsoring the event.

Volunteers from industry, government and the community will serve as judges, rating each project on its originality, craftsmanship, understanding of engineering principles, effectiveness and poster presentation. An awards ceremony will be held at the close of the event, and prizes will be given to the best design project in each category. Members of the community also can vote for their favorite project to win the "People's Choice" award.
