The women's studies program at the University of Colorado at Boulder will host several events in March, including a conference on "Recasting Feminism in the Academy" on March 7.

The program also will present its annual Women and Gender Dialogue Series beginning March 9. All events are free and open to the public.

The one-day conference, in celebration of the department's 30th anniversary, will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in University Memorial Center room 235. A closing reception will be held from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Hazel Gates Woodruff Cottage.

The conference will feature two talks:

∑ 10 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. "The Sexual Politics of Introducing Women's Studies at the University of Colorado, Boulder: Autobiography, Memory and History" with women's studies pioneers Kathi George, Martha Gimenez, Suzanne Juhasz, Joyce Nielsen and Lee Chambers.

∑ 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. "Feminism in the Academy: No Permanent Waves," a set of roundtable discussions with CU-Boulder Professor Gimenez and Women's Studies directors Federique Chevillot of the University of Denver, Catherine Connolly of the University of Wyoming, Abby Ferber of the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs and Jodi Wetzel of Metropolitan State College of Denver.

The Women and Gender Dialogue Series brings academic and community speakers to the campus to promote open dialogue and embrace diversity. The series meets at 4 p.m. in the Hazel Gates Woodruff Cottage and will feature the following presentations:

∑ March 9, "Are All Mothers Equal? Social Implications of Race, Class and Gender Oppression on Black Mothers," with Safiya Bandele, professor at Medgar Evers College.

∑ March 16, "Community Organizing to End Violence in Queer and Transgendered Communities," with Betsy Erbaugh, doctoral candidate at the University of New Mexico.

∑ March 30, "Sacred Brown Bodies: Alma Lopez's 'Our Lady' and the Embodiment of a Chicana Religious Theory," with Adriana Nieto, doctoral candidate at the University of Denver's Iliff School of Theology.

∑ April 4, "Out of the Closet and Out of the Military: Don't Tell, Why Not?" with Mara Boyd, CU-Boulder.

Women's Studies at CU-Boulder is the only program in the state to provide a structured program of undergraduate study culminating in a degree in Women's Studies.
