Note to Editors: Although this event is not open to the public, reporters and photographers are welcome to attend. Photographers are welcome to take pictures of anything except the team members and equipment of the Buckley Air Force Base Civil Support Team for WMD.

The University of Colorado at Boulder's Environmental Health and Safety Department will host an Aug. 10 event for local emergency personnel who would respond to hazardous materials spills or incidents involving weapons of mass destruction.

The WMD and HazMat Responder Show and Tell will be 10:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot between the Regent Drive AutoPark and 28th Street, just north of the Environmental Health and Safety Center. The invitation-only event is intended to help responders know each other better and to learn more about each agency's equipment and capabilities.

Participants will include the Boulder County Hazardous Materials Team, Pridemark Paramedics, the North Metro Fire Rescue District, the Buckley Air Force Base Civil Support Team for WMD and the CU-Boulder Environmental Health and Safety Department.

Hazardous materials spills and WMD can be such large events that responders from different organizations and communities need to join together to fight them, said Sylvia Dane, CU-Boulder's emergency management and planning coordinator. Threats can range from a methamphetamine lab contaminating an apartment building to a full-scale terrorist incident involving deadly chemical, biological or radiological toxins.

At the Aug. 10 event, participants will have an opportunity to meet other response teams and learn about their equipment and expertise. Tours of the Environmental Health and Safety Center will be offered.
