Oscar-nominated filmmaker and University of Colorado at Boulder senior film instructor Jerry Aronson will present a re-mastered version of his award-winning film about his friend and longtime Boulder resident and poet, Allen Ginsberg, at the Boulder International Film Festival on Feb. 17.
The screening of "The Life and Times of Allen Ginsberg" will be held at 2:45 p.m. at the Boulder Theater, 2032 14th St. in downtown Boulder.
Ginsberg, who died in 1997, was a renowned American poet and one of the leaders of the 1950s "beat" generation that included literary rebels Jack Kerouac and William S. Burroughs. Along with his writings and publications, Ginsberg helped found the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa University in Boulder.
Aronson's 84-minute documentary, originally released in 1993, chronicles Ginsberg's life and friendships through the use of films clips and videotape of Timothy Leary, Ken Kesey, Abbie Hoffman, Joan Baez, Norman Mailer, Burroughs and others.
After the screening, Aronson will present additional video and film interviews and clips of some of Ginsberg's friends not seen in the original documentary. The clips are part of a soon-to-be-released DVD that Aronson has produced and will feature the re-mastered film and six hours of additional footage including interviews with Paul McCartney, Bono, Johnny Depp, the late Hunter S. Thompson and other friends of Ginsberg.
