Examining regulatory challenges facing policy-makers as the rapidly changing telecommunications industry moves from the analog era into the digital age will be the focus of a University of Colorado at Boulder conference to be held Feb. 19-20 at the Fleming Law Building.
"The Digital Broadband Migration: Confronting the New Regulatory Frontiers" is the first of three conferences sponsored by the CU law school's Silicon Flatiron's Telecommunication Program during spring semester.
Participants will include former Federal Communications Commission Chairman Michael Powell, Level 3 CEO Jim Crowe and Internet pioneer and inventor of the Internet protocol Robert Kahn. Powell will deliver the closing address Feb. 20 at 9 a.m.
"With the migration to broadband Internet access, voice and video communications will never be the same," said Phil Weiser, executive director of the Silicon Flatirons Program. "The downloading of video programming to iPods and the push to deliver video over telephone lines are just the beginning of a radical industry re-structuring and a period of great technological change."
The conference will meet from 9:15 a.m. to 7:15 p.m. on Feb. 19 and from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Feb. 14. Seating is limited and various fees apply. Participants are asked to register in advance at .
On March 13, the Silicon Flatirons Program will present "The Challenges of Information Management: An Interdisciplinary Perspective on Secure Data Collection, Storage and Retention," and on April 6 the last of the three conferences, "Re-examining the Patent System" will take place.
Both conferences will be held from 3:15 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Fleming Law Building.
