Phil DiStefano, former interim chancellor of the University of Colorado at Boulder, was honored this week by the Boulder City Council "for playing a key role in strengthening the relationship between the university and the city."
Mayor Mark Ruzzin and the council approved a resolution that also saluted DiStefano for 32 years "of distinguished teaching, scholarship and leadership" and for "contributing greatly to making Boulder a first-rate community."
Ruzzin noted that DiStefano took over the reins of the university when its public image had suffered due to issues surrounding the football team and Professor Ward Churchill, yet "Phil's leadership has quickly turned things in a positive direction."
City manager Frank Bruno said, "Phil worked very closely with the city during his tenure as interim chancellor for CU. He played a key role in contributing to our great community through his focus on academic rigor, the development of the Research Park and by strengthening the relationship between the city and the university.
"I truly appreciate all of his time, hard work and support," Bruno said.
DiStefano left the chancellor's office on July 15 when newly appointed Chancellor G.P. "Bud" Peterson took over. DiStefano has returned to his former position as provost, which oversees academic affairs on campus.
