An in-depth look at the science of lasers -- including how they are used to transmit phones calls and emails -- and the physics of music will be featured in two separate science outreach programs March 17 at the University of Colorado at Boulder.
The CU Wizards show 聯At the End of the Rainbow聰 is scheduled at 9:30 a.m. March 17 in Duane Physics, room G1B30. At 2 p.m., the Saturday Physics Series show 聯Physics of Musical Sound聰 also will be held in G1B30.
Both shows are free and open to the public. CU Wizards programs are geared to students in grades five through nine, while the Saturday Physics Series targets high school students, teachers and adults.
During the Wizards 聯At the End of the Rainbow聰 show, CU-Boulder physics Professors Margaret Murnane and Henry Kapteyn will explore how lasers work and what makes laser light so special. They also will delve into current laser technology and will discuss what the future may hold.
Later, Associate Professor Scott Parker of physics will discuss the science of musical sound, including how musical instruments work and why the human voice is the most versatile of all musical instruments.
