A special delegation of University of Colorado at Boulder community members will lay a wreath of flowers at the grave of Andrew J. Macky in Columbia Pioneer Cemetery at Ninth and Pleasant streets in Boulder on Monday, June 11.

The group will be led by CU Regent Cindy Carlisle, who represents Colorado's 2nd Congressional District on the nine-member elected board. The group will lay the flowers at Macky's grave at 1 p.m. Members of the media, including photographers, are invited to cover the event.

The Board of Regents on June 4 passed a special measure sponsored by Carlisle authorizing the placing of flowers on Macky's grave to honor his 1909 estate gift of $337,000 that funded construction of the CU-Boulder auditorium that now bears his name. The memorial observation was originally a regular practice that occurred each commencement day, according to the dictates of a 1908 Board of Regents' resolution.

"Since June 11 is the 100th anniversary of Andrew Macky's death, that seems like a fine occasion to resume the practice, just this once, in Mr. Macky's honor," said Carlisle. "Doing so will help us all to remember that the university's very existence rests upon the vision of Colorado citizens who value higher education, just as Andrew J. Macky did."

Joining Carlisle will be CU-Boulder Provost Phil DiStefano, members of the staff of CU-Boulder Chancellor G.P. "Bud" Peterson, physics Professor Emeritus Al Bartlett and other members of the CU-Boulder community. The grave is located in the southeast quadrant of the cemetery. CU officials will be on hand to direct the media to the gravesite.
