Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper and First Lady Jeannie Ritter will be among the well-known participants gathering at the University of Colorado at Boulder Nov. 7 to celebrate the regionÂ’s rich literary heritage.

“Words to Stir the Soul: Celebrating Our Public Servants,” presented by the Center of the American West, also will feature Lt. Gov. Barbara O’Brien, Colorado Supreme Court Chief Justice Mary Mullarkey and Justice Gregory Hobbs, state Senate President Joan Fitz-Gerald, Senate Majority Leader Ken Gordon, House Majority Leader Alice Madden and others. Each will read a selection from their favorite Western-inspired literature for up to five minutes each.

The 11th annual event will begin at 7 p.m. in Old Main Chapel on the CU-Boulder campus. The event is free and open to the public and CU-Boulder Chancellor G.P. “Bud” Peterson will give welcoming remarks.

“This year the center honors the tireless and sometimes underappreciated investment of time and effort on the part of Colorado’s public servants,” said history Professor Patty Limerick, the center’s faculty director. “With Mayor John Hickenlooper as our host, we will celebrate the dedicated spirit that drew these exceptional individuals into their challenging line of work.

“Participants will read passages from Western novels, essays, poems and memoirs that have inspired, moved, educated and enlightened them, and that represent the Western values that the readers have chosen to serve.”
