Alternative energy cars and bicycles, a wireless iPod charger and assistive technology devices for people with disabilities are among 65 student inventions that will be demonstrated at the University of Colorado at Boulder's Engineering Design Expo on Saturday, Dec. 8.
The Expo is free and open to the public from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The event will be held at the Integrated Teaching and Learning Laboratory, located at Regent Drive and Colorado Avenue.
The Expo will showcase the work of more than 300 undergraduate engineering students, offering an interactive and entertaining educational opportunity for students of all ages.
Engineering students worked in teams throughout the fall semester to design solutions to an array of challenges, ranging from powering a car through a chemical reaction to developing a stable loading and unloading device for use with a wheelchair-accessible horse carriage. Many of the students are enrolled in the First-Year Engineering Projects course, which allows them to practice real-world engineering design in their freshman year of college.
Volunteers from industry, government and the community will serve as judges for the Expo, rating each project on its originality, craftsmanship, understanding of engineering principles, effectiveness and presentation. An awards ceremony will be held at the close of the event. Members of the community can vote for their favorite project to win the "People's Choice" award.
