The University of Colorado at Boulder today named Frank Bruno as vice chancellor for administration, effective June 23. Bruno currently serves as city manager for the city of Boulder, Colo., a post he has held since 2003.
"I am impressed with Frank's record of achievement and leadership at the city," said CU-Boulder Chancellor G.P. "Bud" Peterson. "Managing human and physical resources forms one of the university's most significant challenges, and Frank's record of success in these areas speaks for itself. I am delighted to have him join our team."
Bruno said, "I have been privileged to serve the people of Boulder for the last five years. Now, I am proud to join the University of Colorado's visionary leadership team during a true renaissance for the campus and the community. It is a wonderful time to be at CU, and I'm honored to continue my public service career in Boulder."
The vice chancellor for administration reports to the university's Senior Vice Chancellor and Chief Financial Officer, Ric Porreca. The position oversees the physical, human resource and public safety organizations of CU-Boulder – an AAU member institution with more than 1,000 acres of land, 9 million square feet of building space and 6,900 employees.
"In Frank Bruno, CU is truly fortunate to be getting a conscientious public servant with long experience in managing resources and infrastructures," said Porreca. "Frank brings great operational experience, civic leadership and a strong commitment to sustainability to one of our most vital posts. I am eager to begin working with him."
As city manager, Bruno reports to the nine-member Boulder City Council and is responsible for the day-to-day administration of the city government, including managing 1,300 full-time employees and an annual budget of more than $240 million. Prior to coming to Boulder, he worked for the city of Fort Collins, Colo., as assistant city manager from 1995 to 2003, interim deputy city manager in 1994-95 and economic affairs and policy director from 1989 to 1994.
Bruno also served as executive director of the Northern Berkshire Industrial Park and Development Corp. from 1986 to 1989 and as assistant vice president and corporate officer of the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corp. from 1981 to 1986.
Bruno holds a bachelor's degree in environmental studies and business administration from St. John's University in New York and a master's in human resources management and labor relations from The New York Institute of Technology. He succeeds Paul F. Tabolt, who retired from the position in March after 17 years of service to the university and 11 years in the post of vice chancellor for administration.
The Boulder City Council is responsible for naming Bruno's interim replacement and conducting the hiring process for the next city manager.
