The University of Colorado at Boulder today named Julie Wong vice chancellor for student affairs, effective July 22. Wong currently serves as associate vice president and dean of students at the University of Texas at El Paso, a post she has held since 2004.
"I am delighted to welcome Dr. Wong to our leadership team and to CU-Boulder," said Chancellor G.P. "Bud" Peterson. "I have been impressed by her vision and by the volume and quality of her ideas to energize the programs within our Student Affairs division. She will be a marvelous addition to our university community."
As vice chancellor for student affairs, Wong will serve on the chancellor's cabinet and will report to the chancellor through Provost Phil DiStefano. The vice chancellor for student affairs oversees a large portfolio of more than 30 departments and programs centered on improving student life, including Admissions, Financial Aid, the Registrar's Office, the Office of Judicial Affairs, the Alcohol and Other Drugs program, Counseling and Psychological Services, Wardenburg Health Center, the CU Recreation Center, the University Memorial Center and numerous others.
"In Dr. Julie Wong, I believe we have found a leader with a proven record of innovation, team building and student success," said DiStefano. "At UTEP, she has shown the ability to bring diverse groups of people together into effective teams and organizations under her leadership, and has forged important ties between student affairs and its needed allies on that campus. I am looking forward to working with her."
At UTEP, Wong manages a $3.9 million budget and is responsible for leadership and administration of the Miner Village student housing complex, recreational sports, counseling services, student government association and student publications. She also oversees the student development center, student conduct, international programs, women's resource center and the child care center. She directly supervises the assistant dean of students, five directors and three administrative assistants. The dean of students portfolio includes 50 full-time staff and 150 student staff.
"I am honored and excited by my selection as the vice chancellor for student affairs at the University of Colorado," Wong said. "CU-Boulder is a career destination for any student affairs professional and is considered one of the most student-centered universities in the nation. I look forward to meeting and engaging the community there very soon."
Prior to her service at UTEP, Wong served as dean of student affairs, Sixth College at the University of California, San Diego (2001-04) and as associate dean of students for campus life and director of student activities at Chapman University (1999-2001) in Orange, Calif. She also served as assistant director of residence life at California State University, Los Angeles (1992-99), as residential life coordinator at the University of California, Berkeley (1990-92) and as a graduate resident adviser at Michigan State University (1988-90). She also was a teaching assistant at the University of Southern California (1997-99).
Wong holds a bachelor's degree in recreation and leisure studies from San Jose State University, a Master of Arts in college and university administration from Michigan State University and a Ph.D. in educational policy, planning and administration from the University of Southern California.
Wong succeeds Ron Stump in the post. Stump has served as vice chancellor for student affairs from 1996 to the present. In February, he was named the interim executive director of the University of Colorado Alumni Association.
