Four workshop performances of "Trojan Women," Jean-Paul Sartre's adaptation of Euripides' classic story of war and its aftermath, will be presented Friday, Feb. 20, through Sunday, Feb. 22, in the ATLAS Black Box Studio on the University of Colorado at Boulder campus.

The production is a collaborative effort between CU-Boulder and Naropa University's Master of Fine Arts Contemporary Theater Program. The performances will be directed by Naropa guest faculty and ATLAS Innovator Kevin Kuhlke, former chair of the department of drama at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. The CU ATLAS Center for Arts, Media and Performance, along with CU technical faculty, students and the community, will collaborate in the multimedia performances.

The play, highlighting the "fragility of self," will be presented within a contemporary multimedia setting, where the struggle for integrity is challenged by horrific world events. Kuhlke will integrate song and dance just as Greek theater did many centuries ago.

He is collaborating with acclaimed New York-based composer Cynthia Hopkins, CU dance Associate Professor Onye Ozuzu and ATLAS Center for Arts, Media and Performance Director Rebekah West to create a multidimensional theatrical experience.

Kuhlke has taught acting and directing classes in Cuba, Iceland, England, Switzerland, Holland, Austria, Denmark and Germany, and his production of "O, Pioneers!" with Mary McDonnell was televised nationally by the Public Broadcasting Service series "American Playhouse."

Other CU collaborators include Jean Hertzberg, a CU mechanical engineering professor who assisted with a filming of fog effects; journalism faculty member Paul Daugherty along with CU independent studies journalism production students; film students; and students from music, architecture and math.

The ATLAS Innovator Program, an initiative of the ATLAS Center for Arts, Media and Performance, is designed to give artists significant amounts of time for innovation.

The performances are at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20, 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22, in the Black Box Studio in the CU ATLAS building. ATLAS is located just north of the Euclid Avenue Autopark.

Tickets are $15 for general admission, $10 for students and seniors, and free to the Naropa and CU community with ID. To reserve seats, call 303-245-4798 or e-mail boxoffice@naropa.edu.
