The University of Colorado at Boulder's Conference on World Affairs Athenaeum will host a free, public film screening of the rock musical and cult hit "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" on Monday, March 16, at 7 p.m. in Muenzinger Auditorium. The event is co-sponsored by the International Film Series and includes an introduction and a question-and-answer session with the film's writer, director and star, John Cameron Mitchell.

"Hedwig" won Best Director and Audience awards at the Sundance Film Festival, and Mitchell also was nominated for a Golden Globe Award as best actor.

Mitchell was executive producer of Jonathan Caouette's autobiographical film "Tarnation" (2004), which won Best Documentary from the U.S. National Society of Film Critics. His second film, the sexually frank "Shortbus" (2006), won various awards at the Athens and Zurich festivals. As an actor, he appeared in the original Broadway casts of "The Secret Garden," "Six Degrees of Separation" and "Big River." He has directed music videos for the bands Scissor Sisters and Bright Eyes.

For his work on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights, he received the New York State Senate Democrats' 2004 Special Human Rights Award.

The Athenaeum is a student-run program that brings world-renowned guests to campus to interact with CU students in their classes and in public forums. It is an offshoot of the Conference on World Affairs, and past visitors have included Werner Herzog, Gary Hart, Margot Adler, Rick Reilly, Sister Helen Prejean and Clifford Stoll.
