The University of Colorado at Boulder will host the second annual Buffalo Can Challenge event on April 24 to encourage groups of students and faculty from the CU community to use their creativity and benefit the surrounding Boulder community.
The challenge will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Balch Fieldhouse located on the west side of Folsom Field on the CU campus. Judging will take place from 4 to 5 p.m. The can exhibits will be open for community viewing from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 25, in Balch.
The ultimate goal of the competition is to raise awareness and collect donated cans and funding for the Boulder Community Food Share, according to Joyce Kinde, assistant director of CU-Boulder's Institute for Ethical and Civic Engagement.
The competition encourages teams to build structures from donated cans of food. Once built, the structures are judged in multiple categories and displayed for the community to enjoy. Judges include representatives from the College of Engineering and Applied Science, College of Architecture and Planning, CU Environmental Center and Safeway.
"We also have nine Community Food Share collection barrels on campus located in the University Memorial Center, Recreation Center, East Campus and Regent Hall," said Kinde. "This gives others who will not be participating in the competition the opportunity to give back to their community."
The community will have a voice in choosing the winning structure during the CU spring football game on Saturday, April 25. Community members can vote before the game. Ballots will be available beginning at noon in the Balch Fieldhouse. The team with the most votes will be announced as the community winner and will appear on the jumbo screen during the game. All cans collected will be donated directly to the Boulder Community Food Share.
The Buffalo Can Challenge is open to any campus group, department or office. All students, staff and faculty are encouraged to register as a group. Registration is open and available through April 15 at .
