The University of Colorado at Boulder today named Lawrence M. Levine, Ph.D., as chief information officer, effective Nov. 1. Levine currently serves as associate dean for information technology and chief information officer for the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass.
"Larry Levine is one of the great IT minds in higher education," said Ric Porreca, senior vice chancellor and chief financial officer at CU-Boulder and the campus's current acting CIO. "His knowledge of information systems and environments will serve the growing needs of CU-Boulder's faculty, staff and students, and his creativity and ingenuity will be key resources as we expand our IT capabilities."
Levine has served as associate dean for IT and CIO at Harvard since 2005. Prior to that, he served as CIO and associate provost for IT (1991 to 2005), director of Academic Computing (1988-91) and director of Social Science Computing (1984-88) at Dartmouth College. He also served in various IT and computing posts at Indiana University from 1976 to 1982.
At Harvard, he was credited with building a cooperative strategic plan for IT that supported a high-performance server and desktop infrastructure. He led efforts to integrate IT services and planning with research, instructional, student life and IT facilities and resources. He also oversaw an operation with 150 employees.
"I am delighted with the appointment to CU-Boulder," said Levine. "This is a marvelous opportunity to serve one of the world's premier public universities, as well as a world-class faculty, dedicated staff and a dynamic group of students, all with high expectations for IT development. I'm looking forward to the challenge."
At CU-Boulder, Levine will report to Porreca and serve on the chancellor's executive committee. He will oversee an operation with 165 employees and a budget of $28 million.
CU-Boulder employs a distributed IT operations model in which a central organization interfaces with other IT employees at the college, school and departmental level.
At Indiana University, Levine earned a doctorate in educational research methodology cross-referenced with counseling and educational psychology and a Master of Science in counseling and educational psychology. He also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from the State University of New York, Stony Brook.
