The University of Colorado at Boulder's Fall Career and Internship Fair is sold out to employers this semester, with a waiting list of organizations wanting to recruit CU students and alumni.

CU's Career Services office sees the response as a positive trend compared to the Spring Career and Internship Fair held in January, which did not reach full vendor capacity, according to Lisa Severy, director of Career Services.

"The job market has been challenging for students and alumni all over the country," said Severy. "We're pleased that the reputation of CU's academic programs and the success of our previous graduates has kept CU at the top of the list for ‘must schools' from which to recruit. We saw a lull last spring, but it looks like our employer development efforts have worked and we're back up to previous levels of demand."

The Fall Career and Internship Fair will take place Tuesday, Oct. 6, from 1 to 6 p.m. at the Coors Events Center. The free event is open only to CU-Boulder students and alumni. IDs will be verified upon entry. Nearly 150 employers are slated to participate, providing information on internships and full-time employment for current students, future graduates and alumni in the arts and sciences, business and engineering fields. Preregistration to attend the fair is not required.

A newcomer to the Fall Career and Internship Fair will be CU Alumni Career Counselor Lea Alvarado. Alvarado holds the first alumni-specific position in Career Services, established in August through a partnership with the CU Alumni Association and its Forever Buffs program.

Alvarado's duties include counseling, coaching and special program development for job-seeking alumni at all levels. She also serves as a resource for alumni looking to hire other CU Buffs.

"Since coming on board, I've seen dozens of alumni who are in career transition and who want to find a job they love, but are not sure how to get there," said Alvarado. "It's been an honor to provide alumni with the necessary tools and guidance to help them achieve their career goals. In addition to providing one-on-one support, I am committed to finding out more about the specific needs of alumni and developing programs, services and events with those needs in mind."

Alvarado is organizing a post-event networking hour for alumni attendees of the Fall Career and Internship Fair. Advance registration is required and details were e-mailed to alumni members of the Career Services mailing list.

Alvarado also is conducting a survey in the coming weeks that will go out to 5,000 alumni to assess other areas of need and potential resources.
