A helicopter conducting roof thermal imaging of °µÍø½ûÇø buildings will fly over campus two evenings during the week of Jan. 17.
While the first flight is planned for the evening of Tuesday, Jan. 18, the flights will take place as weather conditions permit. A warm, sunny day followed by a cool night is needed for the imaging to work correctly.
The helicopter will take off approximately two hours after sundown and will be in the air for about three hours. For each of the two flight sessions, the helicopter will be approximately 300 to 500 feet above the roofs and will hover and circle the main CU-Boulder campus, the Williams Village complex, East Campus and the Family Housing areas north of Boulder Creek. The flights will be conducted over two evenings in order to end the flights at a reasonable hour and reduce the impact to the community.
The analog camera on board the helicopter will produce black and white thermal images to show if water is entrapped on building roofs and where buildings are losing heat. By determining if there are leaks in the building envelopes, engineers will be able to implement changes needed to improve energy efficiency and conservation.
When this process was last conducted, 48 roofs were proactively discovered to be in need of repairs.
