As part of National Preparedness Month, the °µÍø½ûÇø will test the Campus Alerts text-messaging system on Thursday, Sept. 29, at noon to raise awareness of how to prepare for an emergency.

"Campus Alerts is the primary way the campus community will be notified if there is a major emergency," said Lacey Croco, director of Emergency Management. "We're encouraging all students, faculty and staff to sign up as part of National Preparedness Month as an easy step to increase the campus community's level of preparedness."

If there is an emergency that affects the campus, critical updates on the nature of the emergency and any necessary instructions will be posted at and on the campus Emergency Information Line at 303-492-4636 (303-492-INFO).

If the emergency involves a threat to personal safety or a campus closure, a Campus Alert will be sent by text message and email to individuals who have signed up.

Volunteers with laptops will be available to help students, faculty and staff sign up for the Campus Alerts system from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the University Memorial Center loggia, or students, faculty and staff can sign up by going to . Campus community members who sign up can choose to receive an alert by text message, email, or both.

Representatives from CU Emergency Management also will hand out educational materials on emergency preparedness in the University Memorial Center. The awareness day comes at the tail end of National Preparedness Month, a readiness campaign launched after the terrorist attacks of 9/11.

As the seasonal threat of flash floods abates, the staff from Emergency Management is educating the university community on how to prepare for winter storms. On average, according to the National Weather Service, the city of Boulder has its first snowfall on Oct. 17. In the case of extreme weather conditions or a general emergency, decisions to close the campus will be made by the chancellor or his designee and will normally be announced by 6 a.m. Daytime closures or evacuations are announced as decisions are made.

Details on the decision process for determining a closure, how administrative leave should be handled for essential personnel and other employees, and answers to questions that frequently arise are covered in "Campus Closing Procedures During Emergencies" located at .

The Campus Alerts system had over 27,000 subscribers as of Sept. 26, including students, faculty and staff members, which means over 70 percent of the campus community is currently enrolled.

Users who have changed phone numbers or switched carriers since signing up for Campus Alerts should log in to the system by going to to update their contact information. Answers to frequently asked questions and support information also are available on the site.
