We’ve all been there – struggling to download the right printer driver or running across campus, wondering, “why did I choose a printer so far away?” Starting next semester, it will be easier for students to print to the many student printers and multi-function devices available in computer labs and common areas across campus. The is upgrading the campus’ student printing and scanning system in advance of the spring semester to give students better, more convenient printing capabilities.
Fewer Printer Drivers
Once completed, there will be just seven standard types of student printers. Students will be able to download a single printer driver package containing a driver for each type of printer available through the SPS system. As a result, students will no longer need to manage a potentially large number of printer drivers for the many printer types, which can be confusing and cumbersome.
Improved Print Queues
The upgrade will also simplify how students send documents to SPS print queues. Students will be able to select the printer type that best suits their needs, then send a document to be released for printing. Students will be able to access their print jobs and securely print documents from a number of printers, versus just one specific printer – giving them more flexibility and convenience. OIT will provide an interactive map listing the location of all printers so they’re easy to find.
Foundation for Mobile Printing
The printing software upgrade will also provide the foundation for additional enhancements. Specifically, it will set the stage for mobile printing, which will allow students to print from mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablet computers.
Student Printing and Scanning
Each semester, as part of the student computing fee, students receive a financial allotment on their Buff OneCards that they can use toward printing and scanning on any SPS system printer. Students can add money to their accounts at the , at a Campus Card Value Transfer Station (VTS), or by visiting the .
