On the Boulder campus, 120 Departmental Property Managers (DPMs) track and control over $285 million dollars’ worth of capital equipment, defined as an item costing $5,000 or more, having a useful life greater than a year, and being a standalone item. CU-Boulder has close to 10,000 pieces of capital equipment being tracked and controlled by our DPMs.

To help them accomplish this task, Accounting and Business Support (ABS), the Office of Contracts and Grants (OCG) and Property Services have created an online centralized point of contact called Property Central. A single webpage, , Property Central has been designed with links to the people and forms necessary for the capital equipment process. In the past, a big frustration for property managers was figuring out which department or person to contact with questions. The Property Central webpage is designed to be more intuitive around tasks DPMs need to complete.

A second tool in the property manager’s toolbox is access to PeopleSoft Asset Management (PSAM) as a read-only interface. This allows DPMs to look up any asset under their control. PSAM information includes PO, Award, Location, Responsible Person, Depreciation, Date of Acquisition, and Disposal once the item has been surplused by Property Services.

  • Fill out a and select Inquiry, Query & Reporting plus Asset Management in Role Categories.
  • Fill out your training requirements, and finally select AM Asset Inquiry in the Role Box.

The DPM Certification Program provides a third tool for the property management process. Consisting of three program sessions, the certification provides a strategic overview and tactical hands-on training. Session I is a general overview covering purchasing, maintaining, inventorying and best practices for meeting campus policies. Session II is hosted by Property Services and covers the asset disposal and transfer process. Session III is hosted by OCG and covers assets purchased with other people’s money. When a DPM has completed all three sessions (as recorded in MyCU Training) they will receive a framed certificate.

For property managers interested in the certification process, Session I will be held Feb. 6, 2013 in RL6 on the East Campus, room W179, 9 a.m. to noon. The session is hosted by ABS and features guest presenter Ted DeMaria from CIRES. Ted is an experienced DPM who has more than 600 capital pieces of equipment to manage, most purchased with sponsor money - meaning additional management considerations, not just campus guidelines. He will share department best practices, and his perspective on the property management process.
