Janet Mock, an award-winning writer who has shared her experience as a transgender woman, will speak at CU-Boulder on Wednesday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m. in the Glenn Miller Ballroom.Ìý
The event, An Evening with Janet Mock, is free and open to the public and is being hosted by . Mock graduated from New York University’s graduate school of Journalism. She came out as a transgender woman in 2011 and became an advocate for the LGBTQ movement. She will talk about her experiences, the need for coalition building in LGBTQ movements, about her work in media and the portrayals of trans women, and about the dynamics of living visibly. She also will speak about gender, sexuality, class and race.
In 2012, Mock launched the social media projectÌý,Ìýwhich aims to raise the visibility of trans women. Among other honors, she has been named to the GOOD 100Ìýby GOOD magazine, the Center for American Progress’s 13 Women of Color to Watch, the Huffington Post’s 23 Inspiring Women Blazing Trails for the LGBT Community and The Grio’s 100 most influential African-Americans. Her work also has been nominated for a Women’s Media Center Award and a GLAAD Media Award.
