Inaugural speech highlights CU Boulder strengths
In his inaugural State of the Campus Address on April 16, Chancellor Justin Schwartz highlighted CU Boulder’s strengths and encouraged the campus community to be leaders in driving change.

Surging undergraduate applications, an exceptional volume and quality of research and creative work, generous supporters who have given $163 million in new pledges since July, and outstanding people working together through shared governance are among the reasons CU Boulder remains strong, Schwartz said.
Before a crowd of about 500 in the University Memorial Center and about 700 viewers online, Schwartz acknowledged the challenges facing higher education and the world and urged faculty, staff and students to meet the moment.
“We will not allow external forces to define us,” he said. “We will embrace our leadership role and take this moment to redefine ourselves.”
Schwartz outlined four key priorities that will help the campus to sustain and enhance its mission amid rapid change:
- Supporting students’ success and flourishing by boosting retention and graduation rates and aiding intheir holistic health and well-being
- Committing to sustainability to secure the future of the university, the state and the nation
- Providing opportunity through expanded access and inclusion, ensuring the university serves, respects and welcomes everyone
- Continuing to seek excellence in all aspects of campus life, reflective of the profound impact CU Boulder has on the everyday lives of millions around the globe
Schwartz reiterated the importance of supporting international students and scholars and increasing the university’s global impact.
He also declared the university would remain unwavering in its commitment to academic freedom and free expression.
“Free expression is a garden that needs constant tending, and our ability to disagree constructively, with respect and compassion, strengthens us all,” Schwartz said.
The event included introductions by Staff Council co-chair Jessica Sandoval, GPSG President of Engagement Dania Arayssi, and Professor and Crown Institute Director Sona Dimidjian.
Following a buffet lunch, attendees were invited to take a bamboo challenge coin, a token of appreciation for attendees’ exceptional service to the university and a reminder of the community’s commitments to each other, the university and the world.
