Colorado business confidence mostly unchanged says CU Leeds School index

Colorado business leaders’ attitudes remained almost unchanged going into the fourth quarter, according to the most recent quarterly Leeds Business Confidence Index, or LBCI, released today by the ’s Leeds School of Business. The LBCI’s reading remained positive, above the critical mark of 50, but fell from 53.6 in the third quarter to 51.6 in the fourth. A reading greater than 50 indicates positive expectations, while one lower than 50 indicates negative expectations.

Staff Council Update: Annual ice cream social a big hit, more events on the way

On Sept. 6, more than five hundred Boulder campus staff turned out to enjoy sunshine and ice cream on the east terrace of the Center for Community. The event included a DJ and more than 20 vendor and campus benefit program tables, and proved a fun and informative day for the attendees. Two additional Staff Council events are scheduled for the fall semester.

Buff Essentials Week to be held Oct. 1-6

The will host Buff Essentials Week, an annual event held to support freshmen in acclimating to college life, Oct. 1-6. First-year students in the College of Arts and Sciences are required to attend at least three events before registering for spring semester classes in November. Students can choose sessions related to academic advising, research opportunities, nutrition, career counseling, note taking, study abroad and others. All students, staff and faculty are invited to participate in the events.

Astronaut-alumnus Vance Brand to present student scholarship at CU-Boulder Oct. 5

Apollo and shuttle astronaut Vance Brand will present student Srinidhi Radhakrishnan with a $10,000 scholarship from the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation (ASF) during a public lecture and award presentation on Oct. 5. During the presentation, which will begin at 3 p.m. in the lobby of Andrews Hall, home of the Engineering Honors Program, Brand will share his experiences from the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project and three space shuttle missions, in addition to presenting the award. The presentation is free and open to the public.

An evening with Tim Wise: A discussion on racism and privilege

Tim Wise, prominent anti-racist writer and educator, will speak in Macky Auditorium on Tuesday, Oct. 2. Wise has been called, “One of the most brilliant, articulate and courageous critics of white privilege in the nation,” and was named one of “25 Visionaries who are Changing Your World,” by Utne Reader in 2010.

CU-Boulder community encouraged to ‘Live Free’ from alcohol and drugs

As part of the fourth annual Live Free Weekend, the community is being encouraged to take a pledge to forego all alcohol use for 96 hours from Oct. 4-8. Presented by the CU-Boulder student group Oasis and Counseling and Psychological Services, the pledge also includes no recreational drugs for all participants. Numerous free activities including a film screening, ultimate Frisbee tournament, intramural sports, rock climbing and yoga sessions will be offered throughout the weekend to highlight substance-abuse-free lifestyles.

Engineers Without Borders-USA marks 10th anniversary

CU-Boulder will host the 2012 Mountain Region Conference for Engineers Without Borders-USA, a nonprofit organization founded by CU engineering Professor Bernard Amadei 10 years ago after he was asked to engineer a water pump for a village in Belize.
