CU will follow the law and provide a safe environment

Today the CU-Boulder campus announced that we are amending our housing policies in order to implement the Colorado concealed carry law. Under the changes we are implementing, housing contracts will be amended for students, faculty and staff living in residence halls, asking those who possess a Colorado conceal carry permit (CCP) to forgo bringing their weapons to campus. Please know that the safety of this campus and our community remains my highest priority, and you have my pledge that we will do all that the law allows in continuing to promote personal and community safety in all places, at all times, at the . Pac-12 Networks has launched

The Pac-12 Networks launched on Wednesday, Aug. 15 at 7 p.m. mountain time, with the debut program “Pac-12 Live” taking center stage. The new Pac-12 Network will be event-centric, with plans to broadcast 850 live events across a variety of Pac-12 sports in the first year.

Louise Vale named Vice Chancellor for Administration

Senior Vice Chancellor and Chief Financial Officer Kelly Fox has named Louise Vale as vice chancellor for administration, starting Sept. 10. Vale will supervise a division of almost 700 employees and oversee an annual operating budget of $112 million. Areas of responsibility include human resources, facilities management, public safety, emergency management, environmental health and safety, risk management, environmental sustainability, campus logistics, printing and the campus bookstore.

CU-Boulder team wins nearly $780,000 ‘Reinvent the Toilet’ grant from Gates Foundation

An interdisciplinary team of student and faculty engineers from the has won a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for its proposal to develop a solar-biochar toilet for use in developing countries throughout the world. The grant is part of the Reinvent the Toilet Challenge, or RTTC, initiated by the Gates Foundation to address a sanitation challenge affecting nearly 40 percent of the world’s population.

New study involving CU-Boulder shows heroin, morphine addiction can be blocked

University of Adelaide news release In a major breakthrough, an international team of scientists from the University of Adelaide and has proven that addiction to morphine and heroin can be blocked, while at the same time increasing pain relief. The team has discovered the key mechanism in the body’s immune system that amplifies addiction to opioid drugs. Laboratory studies involving rats have shown that the drug (+)-naloxone will selectively block the immune-addiction response.

CU to welcome students with convocation, music fest and more

Dozens of activities await new students at the starting Aug. 23, including a welcome convocation and a “Global Jam” international food and music fest. The free events give new students a chance to get acquainted with each other, the campus and surrounding community before classes start on Aug. 27. The activities are scheduled in addition to orientation sessions that cover the details of class registration, policies and student services at each college.

CU volunteers to help new students move in Aug. 21 and Aug. 23

Volunteers from a variety of campus groups will be available to help new students move their belongings into residence halls at the Aug. 21 and Aug. 23 as New Student Move-In begins next week. New students will move in Aug. 21 through Aug. 23 with the majority of freshmen moving in on Aug. 23, according to Kambiz Khalili, executive director for Housing and Dining Services. The volunteer movers will be stationed near all campus residence halls to help students and their parents move belongings into the halls as quickly as possible.

CU-Boulder research attracts $380.7 million in sponsored funding

CU System news release DENVER – Work by University of Colorado faculty garnered $815.3 million in sponsored research funding in fiscal year 2011-12, a rise of nearly $22 million over the previous fiscal year. The preliminary figures indicate one of the highest research totals in CU history; the only higher total came in fiscal year 2009-10, when one-time federal stimulus dollars contributed to a final tally of $884.1 million. Last year’s total was $793.5 million.
