Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter announced Thursday evening (April 19) that Colorado will observe a moment of silence on Friday, April 20, at 10 a.m. MDT out of respect for those killed and injured at Virginia Tech earlier this week. Gov. Ritter spoke with Gov. Tim Kaine of Virginia this week and agreed that Colorado would participate in the observance.

Family housing employees at the University of Colorado at Boulder will take part in a city and county flood exercise on "Flood Awareness Day," April 23, to practice evacuation procedures in low-lying campus areas.

Erwin Chemerinsky, a nationally known U.S. Supreme Court expert and lawyer for outed CIA agent Valerie Plame, will present a lecture titled "Protecting the Press" at the University of Colorado Law School. The talk will take place at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 24, and is free and open to the public. The lecture will be followed by a 5 p.m. reception.

The University of Colorado at Boulder Natural Hazards Center will conduct a groundbreaking study of disaster preparedness among nonprofit organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area as part of a $1.3 million grant. A candlelight vigil and conversation in remembrance of the victims of the Virginia Tech shootings will be held April 18 on the University of Colorado at Boulder campus at 6 p.m. at the Dalton Trumbo Fountain Court on the north side of the University Memorial Center.
