The University of Colorado at Boulder campus is closing today at 2 p.m. today for all but essential employees, according to Provost and Acting Chancellor Phil DiStefano. Whether campus will reopen on Friday will be determined Friday morning and will be announced via the news media by 6 a.m. and posted on the CU-Boulder Web site at www.colorado.edu . CU-Boulder employees scheduled to work on Friday should monitor news media reports at 6 a.m. and may call the CU-Boulder Info Line at (303) 492-5500 for updates.

Western U.S. wildfires are likely to increase in the coming decades, according to a new tree-ring study led by the University of Comahue in Argentina and involving the University of Colorado at Boulder that links episodic fire outbreaks in the past five centuries with periods of warming sea surface temperatures in the North Atlantic.

Currently, campus officials anticipate resuming normal operations tomorrow, Dec. 22, but will provide updates throughout the day today. • All college and departmental graduation ceremonies scheduled for today have been canceled. It is unlikely they will be rescheduled. Students can check their specific college or departmental Web sites for confirmation.

University of Colorado at Boulder Residence Halls Update

Housing Department officials at the University of Colorado at Boulder have made arrangements to continue staffing residence halls beyond their scheduled closing at 10 a.m. Friday through 12 noon on Sunday, Dec. 24, to allow students stranded by the blizzard to get flights or rides home. An estimated 1,000 students have not been able to leave campus due to the cancellation of flights and the poor condition of highways throughout Colorado.

MEDIA ADVISORY A new podcast produced by the University of Colorado at Boulder Office of News Services offers fitness tips for Nordic and alpine skiing from Daniel Weinberger, CU-Boulder's assistant Nordic and fitness coach. Weinberger says it's still not too late for most people to get into shape for skiing this year even if they have a ski vacation planned within the next month. One hour of exercise per day, three to four days a week, is all it takes.

CU-Boulder Deming Center Wins Entrepreneurship Education Award
