Bill Joy, co-founder and chief scientist at Sun Microsystems and one of the most influential people in the computer industry today, will present a public lecture at the College of Engineering and Applied Science at CU-Boulder on Thursday, April 15.

NEWS TIP SHEET Jeff Kopstein, associate professor of political science and director of Central and East European Studies at CU-Boulder, has lived in Eastern Europe for about five years and supports current NATO action. "What is happening in Kosovo is a humanitarian disaster," he says. "We (the U.S.) have the money, the wherewithal and the moral authority to take action." The CU-Boulder Office of News Services has changed its name to the Office of News Services, according to Bobbi Barrow, executive director of Institutional Relations. The name change reflects the office's role within the larger office of Institutional Relations, which Barrow established following her appointment in September 1997. In addition to News Services, Institutional Relations includes the offices of Community Relations, Web Communications, Student Affairs Communications, Publications and Marketing, and Internal Communications.

The Fulbright Scholar Program has awarded scholarly grants to three University of Colorado at Boulder faculty members to lecture and conduct research abroad during the year. Political Science Professor Susan Clarke is in the Netherlands on a distinguished lectureship award at the University of Amsterdam. Clarke has been lecturing on contemporary American politics at the University of Amsterdam since this January and will continue through May.

College and university students from around the state will compete in a Japanese speech contest at the University of Colorado at Boulder on April 10 at 1 p.m. in the Hellems Arts and Sciences Building, room 211. The contest is expected to be a stimulating one, according to Misae Nishikura, senior instructor in the department of East Asian languages and civilizations.

Li Tuo, the editor of Beijing Literature and a well-known literary critic in China, will give a public lecture on "Market, Ideology and Literary Criticism of the 1990s in China," on April 9 at 4 p.m. in the Hale Science Building, room 270, at the University of Colorado at Boulder. The rapid development of a market economy in China in the 1990s has profoundly affected Chinese literature and literary criticism, according to Minglang Zhou, assistant professor in the department of East Asian languages and civilizations.

DePAUL UNIVERSITY LAW PROFESSOR M. Cherif Bassiouni, professor of law at DePaul University and president of the International Institute of Higher Studies in Criminal Sciences, will deliver the 42nd annual John R. Coen Lecture in the Fleming Law Building on the CU-Boulder campus. Titled "Combating Impunity for International Crimes," the lecture will begin at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 8, in the Lindsley Memorial Courtroom. The talk is free and open to the public.

Ronald J. Stump, associate vice chancellor for student affairs and dean of students at the University of Colorado at Boulder, will serve as the interim vice chancellor for student affairs beginning May 16, pending approval by the Board of Regents April 22. Stump has served as associate vice chancellor and dean of students since 1996. Chancellor Richard Byyny appointed Stump to the interim position following the resignation of Jean Kim, vice chancellor for student affairs, effective May 15.

Patricia Nelson Limerick, the renowned University of Colorado at Boulder history professor who also serves as the official self-appointed "University Fool," will put on white face paint and make her annual tour of campus on April 1. Limerick will begin her tour at noon in the office of CU-Boulder Chancellor Richard L. Byyny in Regent Hall room 301. The entire tour is expected to last about an hour, with Byyny accompanying Limerick for a portion of it.

The College of Business at the University of Colorado at Boulder will host the 12th Annual Business Leadership Program from June 13 to 19, designed to expose high school juniors to business and computer skills and the rigors of college life. Participants live in a CU residence hall, meet College of Business faculty and Boulder-Denver area business leaders and learn college and financial aid application processes. The application deadline is April 16.
