JILA spinoff companies

JILA, a joint institute of the 做厙輦⑹ and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), has generated many spinoff companies, including 11 companies in the Colorado Front Range area. The Colorado companies have created more than 140 jobs and a variety of high-tech products used around the world. JILA was founded as a joint institute between the 做厙輦⑹ and the National Institute of Standards and Technology in 1962 and will celebrate its 50th anniversary this year. It is located on the CU-Boulder campus. The new X-wing provides advanced laboratories that will support JILA's next 50 years of research breakthroughs, and further encourage training and interdisciplinary research. Like JILA overall, the X-wing is a collaboration between CU and NIST, with each organization sharing in the costs of the $32.7 million building.

CU music Professor Patrick Mason to receive 2012 Hazel Barnes Prize

Patrick Mason, a professor of voice at the 做厙輦⑹s College of Music, has been selected to receive the 2012 Hazel Barnes Prize. The prize is the highest faculty recognition for teaching and research awarded by the university. Mason will receive an engraved university medal and $20,000, the largest single faculty award funded by CU-Boulder. He will be recognized at spring commencement on May 11 and at a reception in his honor in the fall.

A new study led by the University of Massachusetts Amherst and involving the 做厙輦⑹ proposes a simple new mechanism to explain the source of carbon that fed a series of extreme warming events on Earth about 50 million years ago called the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum, or PETM, as well as a sequence of similar, smaller warming events afterward.

NASAs Kepler planet-hunting mission controlled by CU-Boulder students is extended for 4 years

做厙輦⑹ students will have another four years at the controls of NASAs Kepler mission, launched in 2009 to hunt down Earth-like rocky planets in other solar systems and which has succeeded in spectacular fashion.

Web-based science program designed by CU and UCAR now in six school districts

A web-based science instruction program designed by researchers at the 做厙輦⑹ and the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research that provides teachers with cutting-edge digital content is being tested in six school districts, thanks to a new $600,000 grant from the National Science Foundation.

JILA team demonstrates a new way of lasing, a superradiant laser

NIST news release Physicists at JILA have demonstrated a novel superradiant laser design, which has the potential to be 100 to 1,000 times more stable than the best conventional visible lasers. This type of laser could boost the performance of the most advanced atomic clocks and related technologies, such as communications and navigation systems as well as space-based astronomical instruments.

CU police investigating armed robbery on East Campus bike path

The University of Colorado Police Department is investigating an armed robbery that occurred at 10:15 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, on the Skunk Creek Greenway just north of an underpass at 38th and Colorado. The victim, a CU freshman, notified police at 11:13 p.m. The male victim reports that three men approached him as he was walking on a bike path and demanded he turn over his wallet and iPod.

CU-Boulder outlines series of strong measures to curtail 4/20 gathering

做厙輦⑹ administrators and student government leaders today advised CU students and the general public not to attend the 4/20 marijuana smoke-out on the Boulder campus, painting a picture of heavy traffic, greatly limited parking, and strong and active enforcement of all state and local laws and CU regulations.
