An online meal planner and grocery store geared toward campers and a travel company focused on the world's frontier destinations are among the finalists in a University of Colorado at Boulder student business plan competition. The finals of the Graduate Business Plan Competition, hosted by the Robert H. and Beverly A. Deming Center for Entrepreneurship at the Leeds School of Business, will take place Jan. 23 and award $5,000 in total prizes to the winning teams.

The University of Colorado at Boulder art and art history department has bestowed a one-of-a-kind title on one of its retired professors. The department has named Ronald Bernier its first Exploratory Professor Emeritus of Art History, a nod that recognizes the scholar's extensive studies of art and art history in far-flung corners of the world.

The University of Colorado at Boulder today became the sixth university in the nation to surpass 2,000 in the number of graduates who have served as Peace Corps volunteers. Since the organization was founded in 1961, a total of 2,052 CU-Boulder alumni have served as Peace Corps volunteers, said Charles "Chuck" Brooks, the Peace Corps' associate director of volunteer recruitment and selection in Washington, D.C. Brooks came to CU-Boulder for the announcement in the University Memorial Center.

Professor Leonard Baca of the University of Colorado at Boulder School of Education has been awarded a Martin Luther King Jr. Business Social Responsibility Award for his work as director of the campus BUENO Center. The annual award recognizes individuals and businesses for their commitment to the values of Martin Luther King Jr. Past recipients of the award include former Denver Mayor Wellington Webb, Bruce Randolph and John Echohawk of the Native American Rights Fund. Baca will receive the award Jan. 12 at a luncheon in Denver.

Modern humans who first arose in Africa had moved into Europe as far back as about 45,000 years ago, according to a new study by an international research team led by the Russian Academy of Sciences and the University of Colorado at Boulder.

The University of Colorado Technical Research Service, a fee-based document delivery and research service, will close on Jan. 31. The CTRC has been a department of the University Libraries for nearly 40 years and was one of the first services of its kind. Clients have included companies such as Ball Aerospace, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Lockheed Martin, National Geographic and hundreds of others.

The science lurking in the kitchen and the controversy around the discovery of modern genetics will be discussed in separate presentations Jan. 20 at the University of Colorado at Boulder. The CU Wizards show "Chemistry in the Kitchen" will take place at 9:30 a.m. in Cristol Chemistry and Biochemistry Building room 140. At 2 p.m. in Duane Physics room G1B30, the CU-Boulder physics department will present "Can Data Be Too Good To Be True?" as part of its Saturday Physics Series.

Ken Krechmer, a University of Colorado at Boulder lecturer in electrical and computer engineering, was awarded second prize in the IEC Centenary Challenge, an international competition concerned with the economic, business and social impacts of technological standards.
