Study Finds Stronger Link Between Human Activity And Particulate Pollution

Air pollutants mainly from cars, trucks and industrial activity are contributing significantly more to the formation of urban haze than previously thought, according to a new study. Jose-Luis Jimenez, an assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry at the University of Colorado at Boulder and a fellow of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences, and Rainer Volkamer, a Feodor Lynen Fellow at the University of California-San Diego, were the lead authors of the study published last month in Geophysical Research Letters.

CU-Boulder Scientist Among Packard's Promising Researchers

A University of Colorado at Boulder researcher who studies tiny, rock-energized life forms has been named one of 20 promising young scientific researchers by the David and Lucile Packard Foundation. Alexis Templeton, an assistant professor in CU-Boulder's geological sciences department, is among this year's recipients of Packard Fellowships for Science and Engineering. Each scientist selected for the fellowships will receive an unrestricted research grant of $625,000 over five years.

Renowned Advertiser To Speak At CU-Boulder Oct. 19

Chuck Porter, chairman of the internationally acclaimed advertising agency Crispin Porter + Bogusky, will present "What's New in Advertising. And What's Not" on Thursday, Oct. 19, at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Porter will deliver the John E. Holden Journalism Lecture at 5:30 p.m. in room 199 of the Hellems Arts and Sciences Building. The event is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

'Magic Of Chemistry' To Be Explored During Oct. 21 CU Wizards Show

A fire-breathing pumpkin and some lively chemical reactions will highlight an Oct. 21 CU Wizards show about chemistry at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Veronica Bierbaum, a professor in CU-Boulder's chemistry and biochemistry department, will present the free program "The Magic of Chemistry" at 9:30 a.m. in Cristol Chemistry and Biochemistry Building room 140. The show will have a Halloween theme and children are invited to wear costumes.

CU-Boulder Building To Be Cleaned For Mold, Employees Moved Out Of Building

Mold damage to a file-room wall, which was discovered in the Woodbury Arts and Sciences Building on the University of Colorado at Boulder campus Oct. 3, is being removed by a contractor beginning after 5 p.m. today and continuing through the weekend.

CU-Boulder Observatory To Host 'Historic Boulder' Events Oct. 20

The University of Colorado at Boulder's Sommers-Bausch Observatory will host an open house and tour in conjunction with the Historic Boulder organization on Friday, Oct. 20, from 5:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. The free, public events will include a tour of the observatory and demonstrations of the telescopes, dome and other equipment at the observatory. Keith Gleason, the observatory's manager, will give a presentation about the history and preservation of the observatory. The schedule of events includes:

CU-Boulder Scientist Wins Medal For Lifetime Achievement In Polar Research

World-renowned CU-Boulder Arctic climatologist Roger Barry will receive the prestigious Goldthwait Polar Medal by the Byrd Polar Research Center at Ohio State University on Friday, Oct. 13, in recognition of his lifetime contribution to the field of cryospheric science.

CU-Boulder Receives $1.3 Million Grant For Undergraduate Research In Applied Math

The Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of Colorado at Boulder has been awarded a major grant by the National Science Foundation to provide early research experiences for undergraduate students in the department. The Mentoring through Critical Transitions Program, or MCTP, grant will provide $1.3 million over the next five years, supporting approximately 15 to 20 undergraduates with stipends of up to $6,500 per year.
