CU-Boulder, Denver Center Theatre Company To Host Symposia On 'Oedipus Rex'

The University of Colorado at Boulder will host a free public symposium Jan. 31 in connection with the Denver Center Theatre Company's production of Sophocles' "Oedipus Rex." Associate Professor John Gibert, chair of the classics department at CU-Boulder, will lead a discussion by a panel of theater and classics scholars in Norlin Library's Center for British and Irish Studies from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Gibert also will lead a symposium on Jan. 30 in the Denver Center's Stage Theatre from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Cassini Spacecraft "Sandblasted" By Dust From Saturn System In 2004

Note to Editors: Contents embargoed until 1 p.m. EST on Wednesday, Jan. 19. New results from the Cassini mission indicate the spacecraft was pelted with sporadic bursts of interplanetary dust as it approached Saturn last year, according to a University of Colorado at Boulder space scientist.

What began with a farmer's discovery of some pottery sherds in 1953 led to one of the most extensive and detailed excavations of an ancient Pueblo Indian community in southwest Colorado. Now a group of University of Colorado at Boulder students and researchers are working to reorganize more than a million artifacts that were unearthed during the extended dig begun by the late CU-Boulder archaeologist Joe Ben Wheat starting in 1954.

CU-Boulder Announces Expectations For Greek Organization Agreements

Ron Stump, vice chancellor for student affairs at the University of Colorado at Boulder, and Greek Adviser Laura Strohminger met last night with student fraternity leaders to discuss the university's future relationship with the Greek system, including plans to shift rush activities for freshman new members from the fall to the spring semester. A change in the timing of rush was included among several campus expectations and support programs for fraternities and sororities outlined by Stump and Strohminger.

'2005 CU Year Of Art And Math' To Explore What Links The Two In Visual And Performing Arts

°µÍø½ûÇø 20 events in music, theater, art, dance and photography will be used to explore the relationship between art and mathematics as part of the 2005 CU Year of Art and Math project. The project is the brainchild of mathematics Professor Carla Farsi of the University of Colorado at Boulder, who enlisted help from many other campus departments and outside organizations including the National Center for Atmospheric Research, the Boulder Public Library and Studio Aiello.

Fiske Planetarium To Present Space Shuttle Tribute Shows

The University of Colorado at Boulder's Fiske Planetarium will present three different space shuttle tribute programs on Jan. 21, 27 and 28. On Friday, Jan. 21, Fiske will present the "History of the Space Shuttle," followed on Thursday, Jan. 27, by "Memories of Columbia" and on Friday, Jan. 28, by "Memories of Challenger." Each show begins at 7:30 p.m. and will be presented by Rob Morris, an astronomy educator at Fiske Planetarium.

NSF Awards CU-Boulder $4.9 Million For Alpine Ecosystem Research

Planetary expert Larry Esposito of the University of Colorado at Boulder will share the "Latest News from Saturn and Titan" on Jan. 20 in the first of the "Newsworthy at CU" lecture series sponsored by the CU-Boulder Alumni Association. Esposito, of the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics, will speak at 4:30 p.m. at the Koenig Alumni Center, 1202 University Ave. All lectures in the series are free and open to the public.
