University of Colorado at Boulder faculty, staff, students and administrators will be volunteer readers in the St. Vrain and Boulder Valley school districts as part of Read Across America Day on Tuesday, March 2. The National Education Association established the event in 1998 to encourage children and adults across the country to emphasize reading. The event is timed to coincide with the birthday of famed children's author Dr. Seuss, who would have turned 100 this year.

Two engineering professors at the University of Colorado at Boulder have been elected to the National Academy of Engineering, joining 13 other faculty from the campus who have been elected since the academy's formation in 1962. George H. Born, professor of aerospace engineering sciences, and Kaspar J. Willam, professor of civil engineering, were among 76 new members of the academy announced Feb. 13.

Navajo star and constellation myths, including the story of the creation of stars, will be explored during a live astronomy show at Fiske Planetarium in March on the campus of the University of Colorado at Boulder. John Stocke, a CU-Boulder professor of astrophysical and planetary sciences, will present "Navajo Skies" at Fiske Planetarium on Thursday, March 4, and Friday, March 5, at 7:30 p.m.

University of Colorado at Boulder Community Relations and Moe's Broadway Bagel are sponsoring a book drive with free bagels at Boulder Moe's stores from Feb. 23 through Feb. 27 in connection with the National Education Association's Read Across America Day on March 2. People who bring in new or gently used children's books to either of the Boulder Moe's locations will receive a free bagel with cream cheese. The offer is limited to one bagel per customer per visit.

Legendary jazz musician and University of Colorado at Boulder alumnus Glenn Miller would have been 100 years old in 2004, and his alma mater is hosting a series of special concerts and events in his honor starting Feb 25. Featured events in honor of Miller include a free public concert by the CU-Boulder jazz ensemble on March 1. The ensemble will celebrate the late bandleader's birthday on that day in 1904 with a 7:30 p.m. concert in the Grusin Music Hall of the Imig Music Building on the CU-Boulder campus.

Ellen Hart Peña, a former world-class athlete and subject of a TV movie about eating disorders, will speak Feb. 24 at the University of Colorado at Boulder as part of National Eating Disorders Awareness Week and CU-Boulder Body Acceptance Month. Peña will present her program on eating disorders at 5:30 p.m. in room 235 of the University Memorial Center. Peña's presentation and all other events related to the Feb. 23-27 National Eating Disorders Awareness Week and March Body Acceptance Month are free and open to the public.

The beauty of weathered buildings and abandoned objects from areas throughout the American West will be on display in a photography exhibit created by two University of Colorado at Boulder professors. The exhibit, "The Texture of History: Abandonment and Rediscovery in the American West," opens at the Macky Auditorium Gallery on Wednesday, Feb. 18 and runs through March 17. An opening reception will be held on Sunday, Feb. 22, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the gallery.

The Cultural Unity Center at the University of Colorado at Boulder is offering a new program to retain students who are at risk of withdrawing from college.

David Samuels found a University of Colorado at Boulder program to be invaluable to his success during an internship with Sony Corp. in Japan last summer. The CU-Boulder graduate student participates in the Optical Science and Engineering Program, or OSEP, which provides unique high-tech training intended to better prepare young scientists and engineers for jobs in optics. In Japan, Samuels had a running start.
