Former CU-Boulder Chancellor Harrison Shull Dead At 79

Harrison Shull, former chancellor of the University of Colorado at Boulder, died July 28 in Monterey, Calif. He was 79. Shull, a distinguished scholar, educator and administrator, was appointed chancellor of CU-Boulder in 1982 and held the position until stepping down in 1985. Later that year he became provost at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif. He retired in 1995.

CU Experts Examine Social And Legal Aspects Of Police Use Of Deadly Force

Law enforcement training and the belief among police in the United States that their lives are likely to be in danger at any moment encourages the use of deadly force in any potentially dangerous situation, according to CU-Boulder sociology Professor AnnJanette Rosga. Rosga studies police use of force and the training of police in human rights-respecting practices in emerging democracies around the world, such as Bosnia-Herzegovina where she was a Fulbright Scholar in 2002.

NASA Funds CU-Boulder Study Of Changes In Earth's Glacier Systems

Researchers at the National Snow and Ice Data Center at the University of Colorado at Boulder will receive $1.8 million from NASA to compile an online database of the world's glaciers that combines historical records with measurements from the latest technologies in satellite remote sensing.

Carnival, Movies Among Welcome Week Activities For New CU-Boulder Students

Fall semester classes start Aug. 25, and besides the usual array of orientation sessions to cover the details of class registration, policies and student services at each college, students will have chances to socialize and get acquainted with Boulder during the week before school begins.

CU-Boulder's Chief Technologist Wins National Recognition

The University of Colorado at Boulder's chief technologist has won one of the highest individual awards given by a national nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the use of technology in higher education. Kenneth J. Klingenstein received the EDUCAUSE Award for Leadership in Information Technologies recognizing his achievements in identifying and advancing technology directions for the various needs of higher education.

CU Prof Named Chair Of Trustee Board For Universities Space Research Association

Robert Schnabel, associate vice chancellor for academic and campus technology at the University of Colorado at Boulder, has been named chair of the board of trustees of the Universities Space Research Association, or USRA. USRA is a consortium of nearly 100 universities whose mission is to provide a bridge to cooperation among universities; with the U.S. government primarily through NASA; and with several other organizations to improve research and education in the space sciences. Most of the university members are from the United States.

Grand Opening For New CU-Boulder Student Apartments To Be Held Aug. 15

A ceremony to mark the opening of Bear Creek Apartments at Williams Village, the new student housing complex at the University of Colorado at Boulder, will be held Aug. 15 from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Representatives from CU-Boulder, the CU Foundation and American Campus Communities will kick off the event. A special tribute to the Williams family, which donated the land to the university in the early 1960s, also is planned. A ribbon-cutting and tours of the building will follow.

Colorado Schools Offered Training On Developing School Safety Plans

The Safe Communities-Safe Schools Initiative, Colorado Attorney General Ken Salazar, Professor Delbert Elliott, director of the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence at CU-Boulder (Violence Prevention Center), The Colorado Trust and the Colorado School Districts Self Insurance Pool today announced four regional training sessions to be held in October 2003. The free sessions will provide practical tools for school administrators and school resource officers to develop safe school plans, and information and guidance on implementing Colorado's school safety laws.

CU-Boulder To Test New Steam Supply At Folsom Field Aug. 5

Contractors building the new addition to the east side of Folsom Field will conduct a test of a new steam line Tuesday, Aug. 5, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The system is being tested to ensure that the steam supply for heating the new addition to the stadium functions properly and to test the safety of the new supply line, according to Steven Hecht, project manager for CU's Department of Facilities Management. The building is scheduled for occupancy Sept. 1.
